Re: Is it possible to quit smoking?

chrisldr2005, I'm referring to the post just before mine and where this thread is it's fine. Yes, it's important!

gordoma (below), spam is always coming of first arrivals, without exception. Some have even registered days before, but not contributed a second of CPU time, before doing their business.

Hmm! Definitely a judgement call. It's applicable to the thread though rather than a blatant post out of the middle of nowhere (just had to sort out a spammer on another forum I mod, hawking corporate logos, burglar alarms and nipple covers!). On the other hand, this is the only post from a user who just joined today, linking to a commercial site... Admin call.

On the (hopefully) non-spam front - here's a FREE service for people in the UK to use as part of the National Health Service. Lots of info and I know people who have used this service to quit:

SMOKEFREE

Anyone outside of the UK can have a look at the advice, discussion points and FAQs on the site, even if they can't take an active role in the program. This is a benefit to society in general after all and they give you plenty of reasons for giving up!

Re: Is it possible to quit smoking?

I smoked for 20 years and a friend of mine was diagnosed with emphysema who had also smoked for 20 years. That was enough to get me to quit. i have been smoke free for about 6 months now.

Re: Is it possible to quit smoking?

you can't force anyone to quit smoking, they have to be willing to quit, everyone knows the reasons to quit, the only reason people still smoke is for the addiction, their is allot of "stuff" out on the market that can help someone to quit

Re: Is it possible to quit smoking?

My boss smoked for 20+ years more or less. He had a terrible time quitting. He knew he had to do it, but never quite had the right impetus. Finally one day he did quit cold turkey. He put on some weight, but he conquered that too. He has been smoke free for for about 10 years. He says he can not ever even have one cigarette because he knows he will get hooked again. He says he could feel the rush right down to his toes.

Another of my co-workers quit when she had to stop after going up one flight of stairs because she was out of breath. She was about 40 at the time. She took the bull by the horns and started exercising, first walking and then running. She even worked herself all the way to doing a couple of marathons.

Bottom line is they have to hit bottom similar to the way an alcoholic hits bottom. Then they can quit. Encourage them but do not force.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Re: Is it possible to quit smoking?

Some people can do it cold turkey, but they're the exception. I don't remember the figures, but the percentage is small.

nicotine substitution is the best approach.

1. Nicotrol nasal spray. This delivers nicotine directly to your mucus membranes and it gets into your blood very quickly. You feel it immediately and it is fully absorbed in about 15-20 minutes. Because of the delay, you have to be careful not to overdue it or you will get the first symptoms of nicotine poisoning. It is in a mild HCl solution so it tends to burn, but you will adapt to it after a week or 2. Nicotine is not risk free, but this method is infinitely preferable to smoking.

2. e-cigarettes - haven't tried this but these have a small heating element that vaporize a nicotine solution which you then inhale. The delivery device looks just like a cigarette. This probably works even faster because it is being absorbed by your lungs just like cigarette smoke.

3. nicotine lozenges and gum - I like the lozenges better. It's easier to control the delivery rate and it doesn't make your jaw muscles cramp up - which a problem I had with gum.

4. patches - I think these are least effective since the delivery rate is not truly constant and can vary with skin type and physical activity. I have had to remove patches after doing physical labor because i was getting too much nicotine.

Once you decide to quit, there are local branches of Nicotine Anonymous that can provide a valuable support network. It's a 12-step program so I tend to shy away, but they've helped a lot of people.

Re: Is it possible to quit smoking?

How do you encourage a person to quit smoking that has been smoking since the age of 16?

Give more facts. Make him/her take a look at this place from the uctv.

I have never ever smoked a cigarette in my whole life and I'm 30 at the present (and I never will). Anyone in this thread which thinks that's impressive?

Re: Is it possible to quit smoking?

I have quit smoking 3 weeks ago after smoking 1 pack for 12 years. How did I quit? With BUPROPION, which is marketed as Zyban or Wellbutrin. It is MAGIC!

Before I even continue to write, I want to emphasize that you should only take it after consultation with a doctor and only after you have thoroughly read the potential dangers of this drug.

This drug is originally an anti-depressant. It probably works by caching the receptors for nicotine (which trigger the production of dopamine). Thus, the nicotine becomes "useless" since it is unable to trigger the dopamin flash.

In Fact, after about a week taking the drug, you just dont enjoy the cigi anymore. It is not "satisfying", no matter how much you smoke. Then you quit. And thats it. NO cravings whatsoever! You can fully concentrate on the psychological addiction!

There is also another drug, called Champix. And Nicotine-Replacements can be also used, potentially together with Zyban or Champix, but only after consultation.

I am no doctor, so take my words with precaution.

STOP SMOKING is possible. I cant believe it myself, but it easily is!

Re: Is it possible to quit smoking?

I think the OP may have left the building.

I was on Wellbutrin for about 3 or 4 months when I was still smoking and it didn't help me at all, but I have no doubt it worked like a miracle for you. Nicotine is addictive, but the addiction isn't always the biggest barrier to quitting. There are a lot of other chemicals in cigarette smoke that are biologically active and/or psychotropic.

Actually, at the time, I was using a nicotine substitute. For me, nicotine is more of a stimulant (and stimulants make me feel relaxed and alert). Wellbutrin made me sleepy and I ran through my nicotine nasal spray about 20% faster than I normally would have.

The only reason I post this is that people can get discouraged very easily especially when they think they are trying to do (what seems to them) the impossible. So if anyone tries Zyban or Chantix or whatever, just understand that everyone is unique and there is nothing that always works for everyone.

Re: Is it possible to quit smoking?

I quit 3 months ago after having smoked for 48 years. I was able to do so "cold turkey" without any nicotine substitutes or drugs of any kind. Why? I was committed to quitting for the first time in I do not know how many attempts I have made over the years. I will say that although the physical dependency is long gone, I still have to fight the psychological desire daily.
