I'm ready to give all resources of my computer to WCG projects.
----------------------------------------But yesturday I upgraded my computer from Core2Quad to Core i7. And I found out constantly only 4 jobs working. But i7 processors contains 8 logical cores (4 phisical cores which separate to 8 cores by Hyper-Threading technology). I think that using of all 8 cores can show better results. But I don't know how to set my BOINC agent to do it. My current set: - use 100% of processors; - use 100% of processors resources. Please help me. Do you have Hyperthreading enabled at the BIOS level?

Hi Valery,
----------------------------------------Are those your website profile settings? If so clear your local preferences via the BOINC advanced menu > preferences. Carefully read the note on the website device profile which of the 2 options controls the core use... the processor number or the percent. If you are using version 6.2 of the software, then the number of processors used will be the lesser of the two fields below. If you are using a version before 6.2, then only the 'at most' field will be used. On multiprocessors, at most use: 8 processors On multiprocessors, use: 100 % of processors ttyl

Sekerob, thank you very much!
I set in website device profile: On multiprocessors, at most use: 8 processors (was 4), and all 8 cores now in use! |

I would also be interested in getting a core I7 machine, and I'd like to know if there is a performance advantage when using hyperthreading.
In other words, when enabling hyperthreading, do the 8 jobs complete in less than twice the time it would take to complete 4 tasks without hyperthreading, and if so by how much (ballpark figure) ? |

Yes. The minimum I've heard about is 15% improvement. However others have said they see 30-40% improvement. My guess is that it is closer to the latter.
----------------------------------------There have been reviews of the i7 running BOINC with HT on. Shouldn't be too hard to track one down. ![]() ![]() |

I've never tried crunching with my i7 with HT off, but mine makes 33k+ points/day at 4GHz. My old QX9650 would only do 21k/day at 4 GHz. From everything I've seen and read, HT makes a BIG difference in crunching.
