Evening all
Another sunny and warm day so the walk to the supermarket was a pleasure. Back home I had to sort out space for yet another bin as we now have one for recycling, one for gardening and kitchen waste and one for items that don't fit into either of those. Soon be firework night again. We have a local get together so I must get a couple of good size rockets for my contribution. I can remember Lewes, Edenbridge and Ottery St Mary as special places to be but where should one be in the far north where most of our members seem to hang out? |

----------------------------------------http://www.edenbridgetown.com/stories_events/..._night_2011_gallery_2.php Eden bridge bonfire night was a big event as detailed in the text making of the floats and the torches, collecting the discarded torches(hundreds of them) the day after, great for kindling . The procession had bands from many surrounding nearby towns rival bonfire societies sent a group to march along and the actual Bonfire nights were staged so as not to clash It was a toss up as to whether Lewis or Edenbridge staged the best display People in the photos that I remember George Weston who was the bonfire bishop was our "paper boy" He once walked to Brighton for a weekend away The bishop recited the bonfire prayer before the guy was burnt Remember, remember the Fith of November The Gunpowder Treason and plot I see no reason why Gunpowder Treason Should ever be forgot Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes 'twas his intent, to blow up the King and the Parliament Three score barrels of powder below, Poor old England to overthrow By God's providence he was catch'd With a dark lantern and burning match Holler boys, holler boys, Ring bells, ring Holler boys, holler boys, God Save the King ! And what shall we do with him ? BURN HIM !!! Another stalwart of the society was Fred Mugeridge Part of a large local family Fred was known as Ducks perch because after keeping hens for years he branched out into Ducks built an enclosure and a hut he was troubled for some weeks eventually friends asked the reason . He confessed that his problem was that having provided his flock with a perfect home with every conceivable amenity they refused to perch and stayed on the ground and he feared the could catch an awful Cold. From that day onwards His "friend" having cruelly spread the tale Fred was for ever ducks perch. Dave Harrison also pictured in 1950's images was the local Barber that cut my hair He was also the local Bookmaker haircuts were interrupted by fellas coming in with bets . Not sure how the law was at this time but Dave wasn't a licensed bookmaker Tho he did become so, when some change was made to the rules of gambling there is one picture in the set that shows him as a Arfer Daly type just as I remember him . ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The great Wheelie bin debate In this neck of the woods, I have collections weekly, week one a green bin is collected contents compostable garden and food waste you get a little caddy to gather the food waste ( years ago you passed this to the chap down the road who kept a pig) The other week non recyclable items in a wheelie bin. Along with three smaller approx 25ltr Boxes, cardboard & paper / plastics / Tins & bottles ... and so on & on & on & on............... ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by densnaps at Oct 28, 2011 10:00:33 PM] |

Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes - my 'landlady' knew all about that as well, of course
- was there anything she did not know? We had that poem in my English class when I was young and three lines stuck for 50 years ... Remember, remember the Fith of November ????? she filled in that second line ![]() I see no reason why Gunpowder Treason Should ever be forgot and she knew all the other lines as well. Remarkable lady! Well, well back to the present: Good Morning! Foggy, foggy, foggy, wet from fog, calm so that the fog can stay put - and it's - bbbrrrrrrr - bl***y cold - less than 5 C - brrrrrrrrrr .... |

![]() http://www.visitlancashire.com/whats-on/bonfire-night-in-lancashire Morning all..... Anne-lise That rhyme chanted on the night of Nov 5th in a often foggy damp field in Kent with blazing torches is something to be involved in. In answer to the question what do we do in t'north for the day? Lancaster has a firework display from the castle, lots of bangs and flashes but not the same as the community involvement of my youth http://www.edenbridgebonfire.co.uk/ **************** light airs----dry----weak sun. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 3 times, last edit by densnaps at Oct 29, 2011 8:36:15 AM] |
