Wi-fi Lans (local area network) are pretty safe as long as you secure access with WPA (Wifi protected access) this encrypt's the signal allowing only those with passwords to use it .
I can SEE three other networks apart from mine from the house here when I switch on, all nieghbours. The danger of an unsecured network is that the invader can use your Internet connection to visit websites commit offenses or just use broadband that you have paid for.They also can see change or what ever in your files .
My set up here via Cable comes into the house to a
Belkin (trade name)Wifi modem/router this sends signals to the 5 computers who receive the signal via a USB dongle the size of a memory stick . The range is just within the house signal strength drops off the further you go away from the router .
So its simple if you have WiFi protect it

Evening all

It's been a good Easter weatherwise here and I fiddled around in the garden for a while this afternoon. The grass is beginning to shoot up in an alarming way so I must get used to a serious mowing routine.

Fortunately, I have just this one beast and so have no need of a network but Den is right in saying you should be perfectly safe with one. Every time I boot up I get the message that network connections are available, clearly from neighbours, but the are all secure so there is no way I can get into them.

My earlier point about television and HD was that until all the areas are cleared it is not available on terrestrial and the Freeview access needs a dish for a separate signal. I'm not likely to go down that route.

Hope someone's keeping in touch with El Kapitan to say we are behaving ourselves and hope to see him back soon.
