When I was a young lad of 11/12 in the early fifties, the guy next door was an engine driver. He had been on passenger runs from Leeds to Kings Cross in the LNER days but had lost a couple of fingers and was now mainly on goods and shunting duties. He used to take me on the footplate round the Horbury marshalling yards, leaving home at 5-30…….and yes, the footplate men did have bacon & eggs cooked on the shovel in a nice dollop of lard!

..what was Thomas's relationship to you Dens? None that I can see, except we share a surname pretty tenuous really might be a distant cousin that would be nice. I have been on the footplate of Sir Nigel Greasley when it lived at steam town in Carnforth some years ago. And often saw it in steam going up the west coat of Cumbria. |

Greetings all.
Growing up in Three Bridges the only steam I remember is the short single rail trip to East Grinstead which I used daily to go to Grammar School. |
