Re: Why is this thread here

Sorry Jean Pierre, I work from the "list recent threads in all forums" and I don't always look at the forum category before answering.

Anyway, Sekerob has already asked Tedi to move this thread. Jean.

Re: Why is this thread here

Someone should approach the NIST (National Institute Standards and Technology) here in the U.S.A. and see if they could be enticed into writing something from the CSRT (Computer Security Response Team) sanctioning WCG as being benign in as much as a delivery vehicle for malware / trogans / virus / key stroke loggers and the rest.

Of course, I'm sure an argument could be made, why would anyone trust anything affiliated with the U.S. G'ment has to say?

But, it's one possibility.

Re: Why is this thread here

Hi BarneyBadass,
I think that the proposal to ask NIST is a good one. However I am not sure that they would write something about WCG. Nevertheless who does not try could not earn any success !
Cheers,
Yves

Re: Why are people so paranoid about World Community Grid?

I posted a simple question on yahoo answers. It was "How many people here are apart of the World Community Grid?"

A friend's status on facebook yesterday applies here: "Yahoo Answers, making me feel like a rocket scientist since 2006."

Paranoia isn't totally unwarranted for those users. Most users run Windows and many just install everything with admin privileges. For that level of user, a rogue WCG program could cause havoc.

Re: Why are people so paranoid about World Community Grid?

Yea, I've dealt with that before. I'm a systems engineer and at my last shop I proposed running WCG on our workstations...mainly because they refused to run Wake On LAN so we kept all our machines (about 1000) of them on 24/7 so they could run updates at night. Anyhoo...that's a different matter. I proposed the idea of WCG and was immediately shot down by my Network Engineer...without him even looking into it. He was a paranoid one as well.

I'm at a new shop now and have just started the proposal process (they come around every few months asking for project ideas). I have about 6000+ workstations just on the corporate side of things that could be running it. We'll see what happens. My immediate manager seems interested...but it is the higher ups that will be the big wall to climb.

Knightro2,

Good luck - we wish you every success (I'm watching on your other thread).

If only a few more large companies would come onboard, we'd be able to easily chomp through these projects biggrin
