Quick Questons:
----------------------------------------I am glad to hear about the "cuda" devices, and have recently upgraded to the most recent BOINC. My computer benchmarks do not reflect any difference when I OC or UnderC my GPU. Can we add the GPU's to the benchmarks? I am running a intel quad core, and boinc only seems to see two cores. I just want to make sure I am using my resources as efficiently as possible. Is there a setting I'm missing? I just got a project from CEP with 50 hours worth of work. Is there a reason this is happening for a project that appears to be only 6 hours of running time? Is the WCG going to take a position on a recommended "Additional Work Buffer" now that we seem to having some server issues? I have been reading about Blue Gene for years, and just recently about roadrunner and IBM's new 20Pflops system. I really think it would be a great step to get PS3's in the game, and actually be able to stay competitive with the big named orgs and their systems. Keep up the great work! lodged, none of our projects are using GPUs yet. Our recommended BOINC version is 6.2.28.
To use all cores, you need to make sure you have set the maximum number of CPUs and the maximum percentage of CPUs BOINC can use. The version of BOINC you installed may not handle this properly. Use our recommended version instead. CEP tasks vary greatly in length. So long as the task is making progress, there is nothing to worry about. There is no right choice for work buffer. Half a day is usually sufficient, but members may want to queue more or less. Blue Gene was used for post-processing results from one of our projects (I forget which - HDC, possibly). And a final word of caution: don't let the hype about GPUs and PS3s mislead you. Yes, they have many benefits, and can help speed up computation. But there are drawbacks, too, and those don't get so much publicity. |

For the issue with the GPU benchmarking, WCG don't use GPUs (maybe in the future?) so the benchmarks of the GPU wouldn't matter. There are some projects that utilize GPUs. Not sure off hand which ones.
For the issue with only seeing two cores, you can check your device profile https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewProfiles.do and check to make sure you have 4 or more processors in the processor usage column. Also you can check your local settings. On BOINC 6.2.28 go to the Advanced tab at the top and click Preferences. On the Processor usage tab make sure you have 100% of the processors to use. You might have to click Update in the Projects tab to have BOINC read your local preferences if you make any changes. CEP job time estimates are crazy and very unpredictable. Can't tell when/if they will stabilize. Most of mine have been running in the ~10 hour time frames on my quad. Not sure about the Additional Work Buffer position. I set mine to around .5 to 1.0 days cache. I guess that would depend on what the situation called for. If I know one machine won't have network activity for a couple days (dial up) I up the cache to keep it working while away from the machine. WCG don't currently support PS3's. Same as the GPU question. Maybe (hopefully) some day they will. ![]() |

I just got a project from CEP with 50 hours worth of work. CEP WUs can be very big sometimes. But it also happens that their expected duration is much overestimated. You can check it by watching how long it takes between two changes of the percentage. Count 9 hours of total duration per 10 seconds and you will be within 10 % of the total runtime. Cheers. Jean. |

Thanks for the replies. You answered all my lingering questions.
On the funny side, I found that the only place I had a quadcore was in my head; so yes, the boinc agent was using all my cores!! Thanks |
