I had it several times that 10% (or any other percentage) progress was made. I closed down the system and next time I started the system and logged on it displayed 10% less. So it had all that work done for nothing... I checked the settings it saves every 30 seconds...
Kind regards. |

Which settings did you check? The one in your profile does not control the checkpoints inbuilt into the software. If you close just before one of these it reverts to the last saved one....which could be a lo0ng time ago depending on which project you are running....

Scribe is right, you might want to only crunch projects with small work units.

Or at least with frequent checkpoints, e.g. DDDT and Rice.

What happens when you put BOINC into 'Snooze' mode?, does it perform a checkpoint there?

No. Snoozing just suspends computation for an hour. Whether you lose any work as a result depends on your settings.

You can see the checkpoints occuring in the BOINC client messages tab by setting <checkpoint_debug>1</checkpoint_debug> in your cc_config file btw. That way you can see how long ago the last checkpoint was (and thus how much you would loose)

Why is there such a big difference in checkpoints between the projects? Because you will loose a lot of people when those checkpoints do not occur in a resonable amount of time. I have now disabled the projects which have a big gap between checkpoints...

"because you will loose a lot of people..."
----------------------------------------Actually the nature, complexity and model size of calculations makes it prohibitive to save frequently in e.g. in the case of FAAH (90,000 CPU years so far donated) & HPF (67,000 CPU years donated). Computers that are very frequently restarted or have too limited memory to retain the models in RAM when paused during user input are indeed better off by doing RICE & DDDT which run very small segments. That's the great thing about WCG and having choice. cheers
