Setup won't register service

I have 2 Windows 2003 workgroup servers and one of them I can't get the service to install. The other one is setup fine and they are essentially the same machine.

For the problem machine, I can see that it created the 3 groups under users and groups, but it does not install the 2 users for boinc and the service is not in the services app either. There were also no right assigned when I look under local rights. Is there some type of install log or way to create an install log that would help determine what part of the install is failing to setup the service?

Thanks,
Brian

Re: Setup won't register service

If it fails to create the service, the entire installation should fail.

You said "workgroup servers". Are you sure you don't mean "Domain Controllers"? Later versions of BOINC will fail to install on domain controllers. The only solution I know is to use an older version of BOINC (5.10.45) and create the accounts manually.

Re: Setup won't register service

It installs fine. It tells me to reboot, which I do, and then when it starts up I register with wcg. When I look at the services app, however, there is no boinc. The users are missing, but the groups are there in user mgmt. So, I'm guessing there was a problem in there somehow.

These are Windows 2003 servers, standard edition, workgroup mode. They are not DCs or part of a domain. I was trying to put wcg on them because they have a lot of extra cpu power that could be used for wcg as they are failover machines.

Thanks

Re: Setup won't register service

This is basic, but I have to ask: did you select the service option during setup?

Re: Setup won't register service

No problem. I left the protected option checked which I believe does that. I did uncheck the screen-saver option, but that is the only change I made to the default install. This is the latest boinc 6.4.5 client.

Re: Setup won't register service

I can't guarantee results with the 6.4.5 client. WCG haven't tested it (and probably won't). Our recommended version is 6.2.28, reached after a lengthy testing process: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/BOINC_beta_testing

Re: Setup won't register service

That fixed it, that version registered the service fine. I'm sorry for the trouble, it seems like at one point in time the wcg site sent be to the boinc site to get the software and I have gone there ever since. I will make sure I always download it from wcg in the future.
