confused Computing efficiency

Let's say that we would like to get the most bang for the buck in terms of number crunching taking into account:

1) Cost of the CPU
2) Performance in terms of number crunching (MIPS/MFLOPS)
2) Cost of Electrical consumption

Does anyone know if some benchmarking has been done with some of the processors from AMD, INTEL, so as to have a comparison table of MFLOP/$ or MIPS/$.

Re: Computing efficiency

Hello Hypernova,
It is constantly changing because the latest and greatest is always inefficient in both watts and $. The big efficiencies are in somewhat older chips that are rapidly declining in price. Intel has held the speed crown since they came out with Core2 in 2006. AMD can compete in the low price bracket, but at that price point the rest of the system is most of the cost and a very modest increase in price can get a big performance increase. It all changes every few weeks.
