I've just downloaded the linux boinc client and doubleclicked on it to start the installer. No dice, all that happens is that it puts a map on my desktop which I don't know what to do with. And the installation instructions on the page where I downloaded my linux client are for the bloody windows client! Way to go, guys
So can anybody tell me how I can get this working? I use Ubuntu 8.10, in case that makes any difference. Or maybe I'd just better leave it, if even the installer is this bad. |

It puts a map on your desktop? That's just bizarre.
Anyway, the recommended way to install BOINC on Ubuntu can be found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BOINC |

have you tried installing via your package manager? Or you could use the command line boinc_6.4.5_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh should install it. You will have to make the file executable first by right clicking from konqueror or your file manager then go to properties and ensure the is execuable box is checked.

had the same problem, but open the map and double click on the file BOINCMGR and it will work, you'll just need to let the program window open and it wil run smooth on your Ubuntu.
PS: leave all the other files in place and leave the map also on your desktop (this is the only thing i can help you with) greets |

That last one worked for me. I'm still wondering why the installation process doesn't run smoother, though.
And I'll have to wait and see if it starts up automatically next time I switch on the computer. |

I too am having great difficulty installing a bionc agent on my sister's newly "linuxed" computer. When I double click on boinc_6.2.15_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh shell script... it asks for an application to open this with. I cannot seem to find an down-loadable application online to do this. Any thoughts or links would be appreciated.
Thanks, a Linux newbie, Tom |

You need to follow the instructions: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/ms/viewThankYouAll.do?platformPick=linux
But we do recommend using your package manager instead: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WorldCommunityGridTeamUbuntu |

Thank you!!! I ended up following the instructions at "https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WorldCommunityGridTeamUbuntu" and the installation went smoothly... at least after I discovered what the "synaptic package manager" was and where it is found. Thanks again. Your support was much appreciated... I was close to waving the white flag!!
Cheers. Tom |
