No.
----------------------------------------The only thing which is sure in this area is that it won't be before several months, "several" being really undetermined right now. |

and if you live near a Microcenter you can get one (in store only) for 199.99 !!! They also typically price match New Egg so it's a p[retty good deal. The problem with talking about a CPU being cheaper than a video card is that you need to buy all the other stuff to run a CPU (MOBO, HSF, PSU, RAM) wereas you can usually just pop a video card in at no additional cost. Well, if you've got an "old" core2-duo or similar amd-cpu, and wants to buy a new GPU for the purpose of crunching on it, chances are you'll also need to buy a new PSU... As for the actual price, the problem is that $ is atleast changed to a Euro (why isn't it displayed correctly...) instead, and maybe even a pound. ![]() Hmm, quick look, a i7-920 costs... 404 USD ![]() "I make so many mistakes. €€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€
----------------------------------------€ Problems with euros ? € €€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€ There is a random problem with special characters since the last website update. It has been reported to the techs. Until they find what's wrong and fix it it can happen any time in the forum or outside (e.g. in a compare page) even for a simple quote, an ampersand or a square bracket. When posting in a language with such characters (like yours or mine) I recommend to copy your text input window before pressing Preview. That way you can restore the correct text quickly if it fails. Usually when it has failed once you are safe for all following Preview or Post actions. A bit boring but manageable. Jean. |

Thanks for the feedback. Basically it just comes down to using the GPU while it's in use (not gaming) will be more efficient, based on the circumstances.
I'm an IT Analyst at a pretty massive company. It would be great if we could get the thousands of Core 2 Duo 3.06Ghz's they have deployed throughout the company on WCG. Somehow I don't see it happening, as the managers don't like the idea of WGC and the "potential" security risks and added network traffic... The only possible reason I could think they might like to is that it's an Oil Giant, and they might make it good publicity. Would WCG possibly be able to use DirectX 11 DirectCompute in the future? |

I hope there is no move to CUDA cause there maybe no future in that. The real move should be to OPENCL for platform compatability. All in all though I am doing quite fine with just plain old CPU's.

I support WCG when it conveniences me these days, GPUs have led me to other horizons that are more fulfilling
----------------------------------------To be blunt, top shelf machines are leaving WCG for more innovative venues. Granted they are being replaced with new comers....but wouldn't be nice to have both? ![]() ![]() |

I am all for GPU (I'm active in GPUGrid) but please understand that WCG does not create the projects or the software, they just host it. Now if you could get ahold of the scientist they would be the people to ask ... oh, that's right .. some of them have responded in one or another of the bazillion "we need cuda" threads and basically while HCC may be launching something in 2010 (hooray!) others have said that GPU is not good at solving the problems they are addressing. What evidence do you have that "top shelf" machines are leaving? As far as I know most GPU projects don't use your CPU very much so there is no reason not to do both right?
