Hi
I've recently upgraded to a faster running computer, and I would like to transfer my old agent to the new computer in order to keep all the processing that had occurred with the old one. Can this be achieved? And how do I do this? Thank you Marc |

Marc,
We are trying to implement 'Merge Devices' at the server level, but it is time consuming to program and debug. For the moment, try burning a CD/R with the WorldCommunityGrid subdirectory on the old computer and move it to Program Files on your new computer. Then create a shortcut to ud.exe and install it in Start Up. If that does not work, then just install WCG with a normal download and check the 'Previous Member' box and sign in with your usual logon. Eventually we expect we will have 'Merge Devices' working. Lawrence |

Hello Lawrence once more
I was finally able to get the agent restarted, but it took me a few tries, and the agent automatically restarted downloading new data, so I guess it did not take the old one. Oh well I guess thats fine, the agent knows what it wants. Again thank you for your rapid responce on this matter, and it helped me alot in getting it all setup. Hello everyone
I'm now having lots of problems with the agents on my computers. For the past few updates, the calculations from my agents were refused my the grid server. This is very frustrating, as I know both my machines CPU work at 100% for a few days in order to fold all the downloaded data, and then after the grid server rejects the calculations, it just starts a new download. I really want to participate in this grid community, but my patience is running thin. Need help! |

Hi mxg123,
Let's start out by determining what the systems are: what model of computer, what OS, what sort of connection, what security programs? Then, what does the Agent say when it is ready to return a result that lets you know that there is a problem? Lawrence |

Hi Lawrence
System1: PII 366Mhz Windows 98 dial up I have a firewall and virus protection The system asked me to sign in, with my user id and password, and after I did that it just ignores my hours of folding work, and then start a new download. System2: PIII 1.2Ghz Windows XP dial up MS firewall plus virus protection The system asked me to sign in, with my user id and password, and after I did that it just ignores my hours of folding work, and then start a new download. Over the past week I have lost 3 agent work. It's now restarted two folding, and I could be ready to upload this weekend. I just hope these don't get lost again. Marc |

I just noticed that your statistics show that a result was returned on 04/15/2005 at 11:34:00 UTC (just over an hour ago). This would indicate that one of your systems was able to get a work unit back to the server. Does that agree with what you are seeing there? |

I use a USB drive and go from puter to puter without hickups as long as the CPUs are the same type. If you switch CPU types the agent dumps whatever progress has been made on its current task and restarts from zero.

If you just move your disk drive to the new computer, that will often work. However, if you copy it, and happen to start it twice from the same copy, you are apt to make the servers think that a clone installation is running which will lead to a reregistration of your agent. Using a USB key, I can think of various scenarios where it would be easy to crash the agent and then lose all of the results on the current work unit you were running. So use these scenarios are at your own risk. And, because they often cause problems, you may end up contributing fewer valid results to the grid.
The official supported scenario is to just install a new agent on the hard drive for each machine you plan to use. We are investigating a method for consolidating old registrations into one virtual device, for those people who have reinstalled the agent one or more times. If we develop a reliable technique to do this, we will post something in the Member News forum. |
