WU due dates

If one sees that a WU is plugging away but the due date has passed, is aborting that WU the only sensible thing to do, even if you have invested a significant amount of time in it? Will it be discarded when it gets sent in?

I have also seen that very old units are recognized by the BOINC client and are set aside. Does that mean that WU's that are accepted by the client have a chance of being accepted upon completion, even after it has "expired"?

Re: WU due dates

Work units may still be needed, even after the deadline. There is a risk you will get no credit, but WCG try hard to be fair in these cases.

For a long work unit, keep working at it. There is a good chance you will still be first to return it. Really, the only time you should be concerned is if your computer is so slow it is frequently missing deadlines.

Re: WU due dates

Ah, thanks for your response. This wasn't a situation with a slow computer, just a typical return from vacation and see that it had worked 13 hours on a CEP and had another 13 hours to go, but was past the deadline. What to do, what to do.

At what point does the BOINC agent shut a WU off on its own? Does it consult the server for that decision or does it just decide enough is enough without consulting home base?

Re: WU due dates

Work units have a kill switch at ten times the initial estimate. So, even if something goes totally wrong, BOINC won't work on it forever.

If a problem is identified with a work unit batch, then the techs can abort them remotely. This relies on you contacting the servers reasonably frequently.
