Hi,
Just wondering if it will ever be feasible to get GPU computing going for WCG? Seti and Einstein are starting to implement it. Apparently there can be up to 10 times the computing power with a GPU over a CPU. I think there would be huge potential to be able to use those and get a lot more science computed. Any thoughts? Merry Christmas! |

Merry Christmas! jamie, there are a lot of discussion about it on WCG forums. Take a look at many threads posted before just searching for GPU at search field and found many material to read about: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...=18&submitbutton.y=12

Merry Christmas! GPUs can have 10 times the computing power, but only on the right kinds of calculations. They are not just a blanket 10x faster in every way than a CPU. Also, any implementation at WCG will have to be on a project by project basis (ie FAAH, CEP, HCC etc), not as an overall thing. WCG is probably unique in this as we run multiple sub projects under the banner of "WCG" while others, like those you mentioned, are single focus projects. ![]() Currently being moderated under false pretences |

FAAH uses Autodock, which AFAIK is able tu use CUDA... so I guess, this would be the project that is the easiest to migrate.

Hello RKN_frost,
----------------------------------------'easiest to migrate' is tricky. Internal discussions point to another program. I have not heard that Autodock is up and running (and debugged) on CUDA. [ added later: they are looking for 'beta customers'. That is farther along than I thought. http://www.siliconinformatics.com/products.html ] I have heard that somebody is trying to port it. Folding@Home was working on GPU computing back in 2005 and took years to get a program running on a GPU. Then had to upgrade the program after part of a year, after finding it had problems. Also, they accepted some restrictions on the types of work it could do. So there is a steep learning curve. Right now we are just in the preliminary planning stage. My personal guess is that we will have a better idea of where we stand in 2010. But yes . . . we are definitely looking into GPU computing. I hope that WCG works on a support for both ATi and nVidia GPU over the boinc software and not just for nVidia CUDA like the SETI program. I have now in my system AMD AM2 6000+ with a ATi 4870 and im not happy that i cant use the power from my GPU because there is no project on BOINC that supports ATi GPUs and my GPU can be more then 10x faster then my old tech CPU.

Is anyone running gpugrid and wcg at the same time and with the same boinc client?

Thanks, I'll guess my new GPU will be geforce then.
----------------------------------------One more thing, what version of boinc are you using?

Just wondering if it will ever be feasible to get GPU computing going for WCG? I'd be guessing that it'll be some time before it becomes feasible. If a few % of systems have new nVidia cards and a few % have new ATI cards, is it worth porting to them? How many machines are running the graphics cards needed for it to be worthwhile? Also, Boinc can run on any machine safely. What happens to system stability/usability if a GPU-based program goes wrong? |
