I use Firefox and almost every time I go to a site I get a pop up of related sites. The pop up uses Internet Explorer to display the list. I have tried to rename ie. I tried to remove it in the add/remove programs. Nothing seems to get rid of it. When I now go to add/remove programs it thinks that it has been removed but when I go to windows explorer it still there in program files\Internet Explorer. Whatever this adware program is, it has the ability to keep me from removing Internet Explorer from my computer. I just deleted it using windows explorer. I than shut windows explorer and than reopened windows explorer and found that it was still there. I am thinking that I will have to abandon firefox and use google's chrome instead.

You tried to remove IE to solve your spyware problem?
That's not going to work. Get a reputable spyware cleaner. Download it using an unaffected computer, or you run the risk of getting a fake. |

I have a similar problem. The "related sites" are no problem - they are all full screen ad ware and all I need do is click the cross in the top right hand corner. Firefox more than makes up for this by giving me sustainable tags on all my active sites and saving them on closing down, so I can always continue where I left off as if I were still running Windows 3. The real snag is that MacAfee now times me out every time I try to upload my site file and guests are seeing an outdated version.

Removing IE is an act I'd not engage in. It's deeply embedded in the WOzses functioning. MS was forced to take measures to hide it if a user wants to, but as I understand it it will for now always remains in Woz, and be responsible for many future attack vectors.
----------------------------------------Worse, there are sites that to this day refuse to function without IE, so I use IEtab, to switch to IE render mode without leaving Firefox and even then there are few that just don't work in there either. Mind you, there are manuals burrowing on the internet how to take it out, but you'd risk a full system reinstall if it blows up.

IE isn't the problem.
cummerbund, RicktheBrick - you have spyware, not adware. It is very likely that your computer is compromised. I assume you don't want your computer used by some Russian crime-ring, or want to have your credit card details stolen, so it is vital you remove the spyware. |

What would be the result of uninstalling firefox, uploading the updated page and reinstalling firefox?

Huh?
Maybe I wasn't clear. Spyware is malicious. It can't be removed easily. The spyware has very probably disabled or damaged your McAfee installation. If this is all beyond you, then take your computer to an expert. |

Saw nothing at Mozilla but my browser auto-update check just showed that release 3.05 was in the queue for download.

i am afrade you have some form of adware or spyware or virous.
----------------------------------------anytime popups apear that are not attched to the site you are going to that shows you have a problem. my guess is you probaly went to some site and it said you needed to update yyy program.. you clicked on the link and it installed the spyware or whatever ya want to call it. my sugestion to people out there is if you ever get a site saying you need to update some piece of software you close that window and load up the software site on a new copy of Firefox or IE or whatever and go to the company itself that makes the software to make sure your not being spoofed by a fake site. this has happend to my wife on a few times and I know I have caught myself almost fallin for it once or twice. oh and if you get to a page where it dosnt give you an option to not install something i normaly hit my power button and power down my computer... and not go to that site again. on another note a site you might want to try installin a hosts file .. as it has been said "theres no place like 127.1.1.0" if you google "what is a hosts file you will find this site http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm it is a site i have found with pre prepared hosts file that will tell you how to install it or make your own and install it this wont stop everything but you would be amazed how many places you can go and not get the popups attackin you ![]() |
