following the money

I would like to know who is going to make money out of these warm and cuddly-sounding projects?

I have just joined, specifically to contribute to the organic solar collector project. I carefully unchecked all the others when I signed up. What do i find? My machine is being used for the cancer project.

I attempted to access 'my grid' only to be informed that I have to wait 123 hours before I can see it, let alone fix it.

The reason I do not wish to contribute to this and the other drug/chemical projects is that I assume that the researchers and big pharma/monsanto will be making money out of any useful results. I'm willing to support the solar project because hopefully some new green startup will benefit, and of course because the ecosystem is far more important than saving the lives of some members of the plague species homo sapiens sapiens.

Re: following the money

I am very happy to say you are wrong.

All World Community Grid projects release their results into the public domain. This is the very first requirement.

Stick around, and I will follow up with some more details.

Re: following the money

geoffair, first some technical stuff. You must have left the alternate work option selected. The Clean Energy Project is starting slow, so there are times when there is no work (and there is no Mac/Linux work yet, either). World Community Grid sends you other work instead, if you permit it. There's nothing exceptional about this - it's a new project, and teething troubles are par for the course.

Now, who will be making money? With the results in the public domain, anyone can benefit. This includes researchers, pharmaceutical companies - anyone. In the case of drug design projects, it is actually beneficial to allow the big pharmaceutical companies to go ahead and pay for the mind-bogglingly expensive human trials. But, because the basic science is in the public domain, there is little they can patent. Other companies can make generic versions, and get them approved on the fast-track process.

Quite a few of our projects engage in basic science. The results can't be immediately used to effect a cure, but instead can be used by thousands of researchers studying all sorts of diseases.

You were right to be cautious, though. World Community Grid is an exception, but many lesser distributed computing projects are run for profit.

Re: following the money

yes the world isnt perfict and someone will make money off of others work

personaly i like all the projects here as well as being intrested in most of the ones on BOINC as a whole...

and yes you probaly left send me other work if there is no work avalible...

one reason for the semi shortage of work units for the CEP project is the fact there are alot of people trying to get there badges for the new project so alot of them restrict there computers to mostly crunchin the new project... (for alot of the heavy crunchers they have probaly already gotten there gold badge and have spread out again)

myself i am working CEP and Rice projects but get a smattering of other work right now since they are both short on work units right now

hope you stay and have fun crunching

edit forgot to mention

twice a day they do stats updates and the stats / controls for your grid are down for about 1-2 hours... hope that solves the question

Re: following the money

There is no incentive to make progress without profit . You can bet that somebody will make a profit out of solar energy - some are already doing so.
For the last thirty years there has been hardly a roof top in Israel without a solar water heater. Somebody has had to manufacture them, and doubtless there are similar projects throughout the world.

hi smile

our med research may also help animals.

for example, thousands of tasmanian devils are dying of a contagious cancer in australia.

Re: following the money

Thanks everyone for the courteous and helpful replies. My concerns proved to be unfounded.

As I do far too often, I got all righteous and fired off that first post before having a good look around the site.

Good luck to BOINC and all who sail in her.

Re: following the money

I share the same concerns as those of the first note. I did some digging and here is what I was looking for.

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewAboutUs.do

specifically

World Community Grid is making technology available only to public and not-for-profit organizations to use in humanitarian research that might otherwise not be completed due to the high cost of the computer infrastructure required in the absence of a public grid. As part of our commitment to advancing human welfare, all results will be in the public domain and made public to the global research community.

That's all I needed to know.
