Hi, I'm new to BOINC & WGC, and due to bandwidth restrictions, I'm in the process of switching over from F@H to BOINC projects. I've got my Mac successfully up & running, and now I need to install BOINC my 4-core PC.
My current security software for the pc (Kaspersky) is due to expire in three days, and since I've read here of problems caused by security software, I don't want to make the mistake of buying something that's going to cause me to regret it. So the question is, what is good and won't cause heartaches? Or should I get an anti-virus only program and just use the Windows XP firewall instead?? Since I don't surf the internet much or use mail with the pc (I use the Mac for that), I'd guess that I don't really need a lot of the features a security software package provides. Thanks for help, Pat |

I don't think highly advanced firewalls/security suites do much good. They tend to block too much, and users just automatically approve all warnings after a while (or block too much and pooch their computer utterly). The built-in firewall is at least simple, but offers no protection if your computer is already compromised.
If you understand this (clearly you do) you will be fine. Personally, I have used Avira AntiVir for a while with good results. |

If Kaspersky pops up with a warning you just authorise the particular program, and it's good from then on. |

Kaspersky, Comodo and Zone Alarm are the most frequently reported troublemakers, followed by Norton and McAfee.
Our sample size is small, so don't read too much into that. But, given how small the Kaspersky and Comodo market share, they do account for a disproportionate number of reports. I don't like Norton or McAfee myself - I have found they are bloated, slow and hard to uninstall. But that's just personal experience. Some people love these products. |
