Dear Community,
I sent this to support@worldcommunitygrid.org. But then it came to my mind that this forum might be the better place. Any help is appreciated. Regards, Christian Dear World Community Grid Unfortunately it does not seem to be possible on the current stable release of Debian, Debian 4.0 Etch. I've tried everything from compiling boinc myself (even compiled curl extra for that), installing backports, even trying to run the windows version with WINE and so on. It seems to be impossible to contribute to WCG with my operating system (which is a wide spread OS). I think you should be more conservative with your software version requirements. The best results I got during extensive testing: 27-Nov-2008 21:32:44 [World Community Grid] Fetching scheduler list 27-Nov-2008 21:32:49 [World Community Grid] Master file download succeeded SIGSEGV: segmentation violation Stack trace (7 frames): boinc_client[0x8095a81] [0xb7fd1420] /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6(strlen+0xb)[0xb7c5543b] /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6(vsprintf+0x8b)[0xb7c41b1b] /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6(sprintf+0x2e)[0xb7c2e39e] boinc_client[0x80972ba] [0x2f2f2f2f] If you don't have any Idea of what I still could try, then sadly I have to say: CU, maybe, after the nexte Debian Release... You didn't specify which version(s) of BOINC you tried to install, or where you got them from. Not all BOINC packages out there are created equal.
Any of the methods you tried should have worked, so I would very much like to see more complete output from your various attempts. You seem to have tried many methods. Did you try the (to us) most obvious? Either use the self-extracting executable provided by WCG (you may prefer to use one of the older versions), or use one of the stable Ubuntu packages. Don't use the latest, it's broken. |

Hello Dydactylos,
thank you very much for your reply. You are right - I didn't specify the version, perhaps because it have been so many of them. ;-) The thirst thing I tried was the current recommended binary, 6.2.15. This doesnt work at all, because it depends on a version of glibc that isn't available on Debian stable system. Then I tried self compiled versions of 6.2.15 and the latest available version on svn. They do compile (when i compile a newer version of curl first) but they didn't work too. I think with the same results as posted already. I also tried a deb package from www.backports.org and the version that originally shipped with Debian 4.0. All the same results. I even tried to compile 6.2.15 and the latest on svn with various options. All compiled, but all the same problem. I also tried an older binary from boinc, but I think it had almost the same results. It seems the problem is maybe not directly connected to boinc but to WCG. I'll give your suggested deb package from ubunty a try, but I doubt that it will work, i think it will alsp depend on a newer glibc present in Ubuntu. You see, I have tried much more than the average user will. I think it was fairly much effort, for someone who is wiling to help a project. If anyone had success to use WCG/Boinc with Debian stable, please tell me! Regards, Christian |

Didactylos - I should have noted, that I wanted to join World Community Grid after I heard about Team UserFriendly.org! :-)

Don't use 6.2.x at all. It is new and.... flaky.
Use 5.10.45. It is the only version that is stable* and supported. * (Or as stable as BOINC ever gets, anyway) |

Version 5.10.45:
----------------------------------------cbritz@Amiga5000:~/BOINC$ ./run_manager ./boincmgr: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by ./boincmgr) [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 28, 2008 12:40:53 AM] |

You are quite correct.
I had forgotten how old Etch was. As it happens, I gave someone else the same advice for the same problem almost exactly a year ago. But the older version then was 5.8.17. You should try that, also. AFAIK it was the last version to use GLIBC_2.3. All BOINC versions are archived here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/ |

When I installed it on Etch, I found the version on the download page (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php) under 'Older Linux x86 and x64' to be what I needed.

Now I compiled version 5.10.45 myself and that did the trick.
Now I have a working installation of boinc with gui. Are there any major flaws in this older version? Thank you once again, Christian |

Use 5.10.45. It is the only version that is stable* and supported. 5.10.45 led to success. After compiling it myself. Note: This version dosn't need libraries that are newer than in Debian Stable. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 2, 2008 1:10:13 AM] |
