I tried to ask this in the IRC channel but not many people were on at 12:00am the night before Thanksgiving...
My question has to do with the task size of FAAH projects. I have my computer set so that it goes into suspend after about 10 minutes of inactivity. Also, since I have been working like crazy lately, my computer is essentially never 'on' - it is always in standby. Every now and then when I look at the WCG log it says that I should consider aborting the task because it is really old and has only gotten about 10% or 20% complete. To specify, the task will have a due date and I will be way off the mark. I was wondering if there was some setting I could change so that I could either receive smaller tasks or allow more time to complete the tasks. I really don't care about points, I just want the work done to be helpful. Will the analyzed task still be useful to the FAAH project if its long overdue? Also, I was searching about this on the forums and came across the 'additional work buffer'. Originally mine was set to 0 but I just increased it to the maximum setting of 10. Will this allow me more time to complete tasks? Should I change this setting back? Thanks for your help in advance and have a happy Thanksgiving. |

Hi John,
I have a similar computer. Keep the buffer as small as possible (e.g 0.25 days or even smaller). That way your systems will only keep the WUs in your system for the current and next run. Any bigger buffer sizes will hardly work with a system that is not running 24/7. I don't know your system, but recent FAAH WUs were really short. If the FAAH is to long, than change the settings to other projects (if possible) - NRftW or HCC are very consistent in the length and have short checkpoint times. Just keep crunching Hope that helps. Cheers ![]() |

John,
----------------------------------------Looking at the amount of time per crunching session, doing FAAH might not be too good an idea because of the far-apart check-pointing (See FAQ for details as to the meaning). On my (stock) quad I'm seeing half an hour between each checkpoint thus on yours, if it shuts down just before one and restarts, all the processing time since last checkpoint is lost... which is why you never got beyond 20% on the latest jobs. RICE and the currently on hold DDDT have only few minutes between checkpoints, thus standby/resume looses very little processing time. HPF2 has similar wide checkpointing as FAAH and HCC towards the end has the longest probably. The techs are developing with the BOINC programmers a method to identify device power and automatically offer smaller size work plus maybe an option to indicate light, medium, heavy. Latter of course for the 24/7 power crunchers. Sometime 2009 that would be realized, is the plan. Oh and for very part time i recommend the cache size to be set to zero and "connect every" to for instance 0.05 days. This way your computer only goes to fetch new work just before finishing the current job. That helps to give you the maximum deadline which is 12 days. For HPF2 only its 20 days. Happy Thanksgiving

John, you should also consider letting it work while you are using your computer. Most people see no difference at all.

John, you should also consider letting it work while you are using your computer. Most people see no difference at all. I believe that I have always had the Computing Allowed when computer is in use box checked. I guess I am just going to have to wait for an update for BIONIC or change what sort of tasks I am doing (e.g. go to RICE). |
