Beta test of 6.2.28 World Community Grid - BOINC software

I've downloaded and installed the latest beta test 6.2.28 over 5.10.45 and the end result is that it is working fine. I have a quad core 64 bit Vista Ultimate computer now. Because I don't know much about Vista (Last computer was Win Me) I didn't know what to choose on the install menu. I didn't choose run as a service under restricted account because I don't know what that means so I chose the other option.

I took the precaution of running Update on the old version first so 3 items ready to report would be reported immediately and not lost if the upgrade went bad. I guess that was unnecessary?

There was nothing unusual about the installation. It installed like any other software I've recently added.

After restarting, I noticed I didn't have to deal with the program being blocked upon startup. It was there running and doing a benchmark test before running the 4 waiting work units. I'm the only one using this computer and I install using my normal account as administrator and when I log on, it's always as the administrator even though I did set up one non-admin account. I haven't logged in on that account to see it WCG would run there.

Just to make sure, I exited the program using the tray icon, did a full shut down, and then powered back up. Everything came up running. I did notice a delay in the jobs starting to run. I didn't read the latest release notes so I guess that's part of the new design?

I still have my old Win Me system running the rice project under 5.10.45. Since Vista 64 bit does not run some of my treasured legacy 16 bit software, I've kept the old computer still chugging out work. Is it worth while to upgrade that too?

Is there anything else I should check to make this reporting of my installation experience complete?

Hello mikefinn,
I did notice a delay in the jobs starting to run. I didn't read the latest release notes so I guess that's part of the new design?

Right, there is an adjustable delay while starting up.

Sounds good!

Went from 6 2 25 to 6 2 28. It did not keep wu's in queue or the one in progress. Same thing that happened when upgrading from 5 10 45. The stats are updating now so can't check if it detatched the wu's or they are lost till no reply. Win xp pro p4 2.6 1g ram

hmmm, it should have during the migration. Often uninstalling and a second reinstalling will recover the work, at least that was the workaround I read about when experiencing the same thing with an early 6.2 version. It did do it then.

Re: Beta test of 6.2.28 World Community Grid - BOINC software

I still have my old Win Me system running the rice project under 5.10.45. Since Vista 64 bit does not run some of my treasured legacy 16 bit software, I've kept the old computer still chugging out work. Is it worth while to upgrade that too?

Since I had a successful upgrade on my Vista system, I went ahead and tried to upgrade my old Win Me system. First, I set my agent not to accept any new work, then worked to completion my last two work units and made sure they got reported before proceeding. With empty work queue, I installed the 6.2.28 over 5.10.45.

The installation was a success. I allowed my agent to start taking on new work and I am running Nutritious Rice project with no problems.

So, it appears even an older computer can upgrade too and continue working with the latest WCG BOINC software.

Re: Beta test of 6.2.28 World Community Grid - BOINC software

Hi,

The rule with those OSses like WinME and earlier is, that if it works it works, but revisions of the current WCG projects and future will not be tested for compatibility. So please keep an eye out that the tasks continue to run and validate and if they don't, deselect in the My Grid > My Projects page.

cheers

Re: Beta test of 6.2.28 World Community Grid - BOINC software

Perhaps, probably knowing me..., I did something wrong when I updated to 6.2.28.

When I switch on my PC, WGC automatically starts up but work units remain in a suspended status until I hit the update button, then everything starts running as normal. Any ideas what I did wrong? And how to fix it please? biggrin

It's not a major thing but it's annoying if I don't remember to hit update...
