sad Please change the throttling of the BOINC agent. I can't take it!

I used to use the Windows agent, can't remember the name (too tired right now). But that has been discontinued and I was then forced to use the Boinc agent. I hate it and can't/won't use it. Here's why:

"Note: If you set the throttle in the BOINC agent (called: Use no more than: % of processor time) to 60%, the agent will run at 100% for three seconds, and then at 0% for two seconds."

It's making my CPU run at 100%?!?!?! This makes absolutely no sense to me. Instead of my fan running at constant speed, now it goes up and down with the CPU. Plus I feel like the random increases and decreases are putting unnecessary strain on my CPU. I used to be able to get my cpu frequency to hover at 1GHZ per core with the WCG agent on, and keep temps under 60C. It's not worth putting my computer through all this with the new agent since work units take 3 times as long compared to the old agent with the same EXACT SETTINGS! Why are they taking longer with the new agent???? Please change this in the future to use 30% of the CPU at all times if this is what I have chosen. I still ask people to install it when I fix their computers, but my laptop just can't handle this stress.

Re: Please change the throttling of the BOINC agent. I can't take it!

Set it to 50%.

This will give the shortest time step and avoid any fan trouble.

There is nothing wrong with 100%, either. It doesn't put any unusual strain on the CPU. The only reason for the default throttle setting is to prevent laptops becoming uncomfortably hot.

Also, work units do not take longer. I'm afraid this is just your imagination. Work unit lengths vary from time to time, and probably you are comparing apples with oranges. If anything, the BOINC agent is a tiny bit faster.

ThreadMaster GUI (Windows only) can solve the problem and offers continues throttled speed.

Speedfan offers a way to tweak the fan to a constant speed, sufficiently low to not irritate, at ample revolutions to keep the CPU cool enough.

cheers
