Throttling affecting fan speed [Resolved]

I have a system that I thought I wanter to run at 70% but the fan would also change speed along with the processor, making for an annoying on then off sound in the quiet office. Prior to installing WCG, the fan would run at low speed all the time. Since we wanted to run WCG on that system, we decided to run at 100%. While this makes the fan run all the time at high speed on this mini tower, it is less annoying than listening to the fan change speeds all day long.

I make the assumption that this ACER system has a different type of fan management system and so I post this wondering if anyone has a better answer.

Re: Throttling affecting fan speed

You can probably change the trigger temperatures in the BIOS. Be careful not to let it get outside safe limits.

Re: Throttling affecting fan speed

Hi Astrolab,

Get SpeedFan. It allows dynamic fan speed control, so at 70%, you can set the fan at sort of a minimum speed and enter a target CPU temperature. It works to gracefully increase the fan speed until it finds a balance. Requires a little tweaking.

We have an FAQ with more utilities and links: http://worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490.

There's also a "smooth" throttle" tool that work great with BOINC. ThreadMaster GUI. We have an FAQ for that too. Works with W2K and up, Vista, XP, W2K3 and 8.

cheers
