Hi all,
i'm new to BOINC. I'm running it on my Ubuntu web server and installed it via ssh, so there's no gui interface. I installed it yesterday and have run top and it is showing up as running. When I go to the stats page, it hasn't got any details about how long it's been running although it's been running almost a day. How do i ensure that it's running properly? I understand the stats are only updated twice a day, but thought something would be showing up by now. Any info appreciated, thanks, Ainslee |

You can use boinccmd to check on progress.

Hi Didactylos, I did that and it showed up as no results. I also tried get_project_status but it came up wih Authorization failure: -155. This has come up with a few other commands, which is making me think that I may not have it configured properly.
I'll explain how i set it up. I downloaded the .sh file and transferred it over to my web server and executed it. I then did ./run_client. I ran top after this which showed BOINC as running. In the time_stats_log it shows 1226195354.591353 power_on 1226195364.602191 net_unknown Not sure if that will help you in anyway. This is all new to me. Cheers, Ainslee |

You should probably make sure you are running BOINC with the --redirectio switch*. This will automatically create log files with the messages produced by BOINC.
Authorization isn't needed if you run boinccmd from the same directory as boinc - but that can be less obvious than you hope. You can authorise explicitly using the convoluted hoop-jumping described for --passwd here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Boinccmd_tool and here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Controlling_BOINC_remotely * For some reason, BOINC have failed to document this. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Berkeley's documentation is worse than useless - outdated, misleading, incomplete. It's a nightmare, and David Anderson has done everything he can to keep it that way. |

Ok, so i ran boinc_cmd from the same directory that BOINC is in. I did try the password, and came up with same results as it did without the password, which makes me think I don't require authorisation.
the Authorization failure: -155 doesn't seem to be coming up anymore either. I think now i'll just have to wait and see if my profile updates. I'm not concerned that it's not showing any project results yet, as I understand these may take awhile. My concern is that it shows up as 0 time running. Maybe i'm being impatient :) Thanks, Ainslee |

What does top show?
You really need --redirectio, because that is the only way to get the message log. It should be in a file named stdoutdae.txt |

i just noticed something, when i go back and look at what i've previously done, when i tried running ./boincmgr it returns Error: Unable to initialize gtk, is DISPLAY set properly?, which I didn't worry about because I'm not accessing BOINC via a gui, only via ssh.

The boinc process doesn't do the work, other processes do the actual work. When I said show me top, I meant everything, not just the boinc line.
Yes, you will have trouble running BOINC Manager without a display. That's fine. |
