"Re-implemented Hyper-threading. Each of the four cores can process two threads simultaneously, so the processor appears to the OS as eight CPUs."

Hyper-threading!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO crying
Why LORD, why!

Because hyperthreading gives a real advantage in the way most people use their computers. No use to us, but it's going to make word processing and web browsing just that bit faster.

Yeah. Really useful.

Yeah, for that it would be the difference between .1 sec and .01 sec. Like anyone will be able to tell. For word processing and browsing, it is already so close to instant I can't tell. But for number crunching just disable the hyperthreading.

Cheers

Re: Core i7 to be released 11/17/08

Hello,

Finally, Intel is starting to eliminate the bottle necked legacy 'front side bus' as AMD did as far back as 2002 or earlier. They are using a similiar architecture to AMD which is the based off the Digital Compaq Alpha EV bus design. I believe I read the Intel 'Quick Path' will use the Alpha EV7.0 ver 2.0 specifications where AMD licensed and used the Alpha EV6.8 or similiar. Both are a very advanced, efficient, super scalar, low latency architecture.

Man, I had a P4 CPU only one time with Hyperthreading enabled and it actually caused programs to run slower and even crash!!! I'm not looking forward to the re-emergence of Intel Hyperthreading, I hope it can be disabled in the BIOS.

Re: Core i7 to be released 11/17/08

Also, I remember writing code in MS Visual Basic at that time and the program code for some odd reason didn't execute in the correct order causing irregular excution and it took me a while to figure out Hyperthreading was probably the cause! Apparently, some code might not execute in the correct order? Boggles my mind.

I hope the programs running on the WCG can gracefully handle Hyperthreading.

Re: Core i7 to be released 11/17/08

Set the controls for the heart of the sun.

Version 6.2.x has a percent choice for CPU processors, so 50% would take 4. Then at least for Windows there's a great tool to assign BOINC individual processes to physical cores (auto-affinity). Just tell it that e.g. HCC is only allowed on 0 through 3 or 1,3,5,7 or any other combination.

Fear, not for the faint hearted though. The things one does for overboard volunteer computing wink

It might be interesting to crunch 8 BOINC WU's at a time with a HTed Intel Core i7 quad.

And more interesting crunch 8 WU at a time and each WU only need 1 hours to complete wink biggrin

Not in all cases. The rice project takes 8 or 9 hours regardless of your CPU speed.
