confused BOINC version and WCG Homepage disparity.

Not an issue to sorts just not understanding what it going on! BOINC is up to version 6.2.19. Yet Version 5.10.45 is what is offered in the WCG homepage once you log in. I do not know if WCG is aware of the newer update! I also would like to know if there is a reason for not using the newer BOINC with WCG? Do I not know something I should? I am using the new version and have had no issues with it as it is better integrated for Vista. So there it is for what it is worth!?

Re: BOINC version and WCG Homepage disparity.

BOINC, bigger and better bugs.

Joy.

Did you know that 5.10 was updated 45 times before the most major bugs were fixed and World Community Grid accepted it?

And that was just the bugs that people noticed. There are many more documented now.

WCG are still tracking some major bugs in BOINC 6.

Meanwhile, Berkeley are pushing ahead with BOINC 6.4, despite the failure of 6.2. Seems they just won't learn from past mistakes!

And the thread given by brinktastee is following on this official announcement in the "Beta Testing" section:
Please help us beta test the 6.2.25 World Community Grid - BOINC software

Cheers. Jean.

Re: BOINC version and WCG Homepage disparity.

Seems a shame that WCG still offers 5.10.45. I wanted to run BOINC on Vista. I tried using different install folders as suggested on the WCG forum. Then I ran out of time for WCG ideas. Just went to the BOINC site, downloaded the current version (as of 10/30/08), attached to WCG project, and it works fine.

On this date WCG was already offering its beta 6.2.25 version (see my post above yours) which is at least as good as the 6.2.19 recommended by Berkeley. And knowing how careful WCG is when offering new versions you would not have taken a big risk loading it. smile

Cheers. Jean.

Re: BOINC version and WCG Homepage disparity.

It seems that the CAs and Techs have been unnecessarily busy explaining to members why it is better to have a version of BOINC that runs and is reliable (5.10.45) rather that a version that is loaded with bugs and problems (6.x). I don't see why people think that newer is better. Eventually the bugs MAY get worked out.

I have Vista system that are running just fine, so I don't seem to need 6.2 to use WCG on Vista. I have single, dual and triple core systems so 5.10.45 is good for me.

The core task of WCG is to complete the crunching of WU. Why would I want or need to install buggy software that slows down or prevents me from doing that?

I know that my little group of computers is not fully representative of all the computers out there, so there are going to be problems with some people running 5.10.45. For goodness sakes people, take a pill and give these people some time to test the software! As a WCG member, I appreciate having WCG specialists between my systems and the BOINC staff, who are looking out for me. There are 400,000 WCG members who cannot be put at risk just so that your problem today gets dealt with.

If you are running 5.10.45, which is the supported version of BOINC, or beta testing 6.2.25, and you have a problem, then you have a legitimate concern. If you are running anything else, you are ON YOUR OWN and need to quit badgering the CAs and Techs.

Re: BOINC version and WCG Homepage disparity.

The thing is, 5.10.45 has its problems, too. Many people have had difficulties with 5.10.45 and Vista.

So, we try to support all the recommended Berkeley releases, despite their flaws. Anyone using alpha software, though, is on their own.

Thanks Did. So I understand your view, what are the 'recommended Berkeley releases'?
