Work unit lengths extended to 9 hours

Greetings all,

We have extended the run times of the work units to be 9 hours starting with batch00200. This will decrease the load on our servers since we are seeing a very nice increase in members. This is more of a precaution as we would like to keep the servers running at a nice service speed.

We will still be targeting the same number of calculations per work group for the researchers. The main difference will be in the number of copies sent out and the number of hand shakes between client and server.

Thank you again for your participation,
-Uplinger

I forgot to mention that these work units are estimated to start going out early to mid next week.

Re: Work unit lengths extended to 9 hours

Keith,

unless one is watching the download, the batch number is not visible, to me. Is there a way for members to find out and dont tell me R00176 means batch 176 blushing

cheers

Re: Work unit lengths extended to 9 hours

Sek,

You are most absolutely correct. The R followed by 5 numbers is the batch number. So R00176 is from batch 176. Sectioning off work units in to batches makes my life a lot easier when packaging results and building work units. You can find the work unit name a few ways.

  • Click on the Rotating images in the Simple View GUI. Then when the graphics for the project are pulled up. Press the letter 'm' on your keyboard, this should work on linux and mac also. You will see the name of the work unit in the bottom of the text that pulls up.
  • Or, In Advanced view, go to the Tasks Tab and under Name you should see the work unit name
  • Or, Go on the website under My Grid and click on the link for Result Status and you can see the work units that are In Progress and those should be running on your machines.

Hope this helps,
-Uplinger

Re: Work unit lengths extended to 9 hours

uplinger,
Just to make sure, please do not forget to adjust the limit for the output file size. With longer jobs and soon coming (mid november) faster processors there will be much more work to pack in the result files. The bigger the files the bigger the loss/waste if a safety feature decides to simply dump the results.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: Work unit lengths extended to 9 hours

The result file sizes have been increased (from max of 7MB to 8MB)

Re: Work unit lengths extended to 9 hours

The main difference will be in the number of copies sent out and the number of hand shakes between client and server.

So with extension to 9 hours there are less than 19 workunits sent out, am I correct?

Where can I see the current status and the expected end of the project?

Re: Work unit lengths extended to 9 hours

Since the need is about 120,000 'seeds', indeed 9 hours will result in less work units needing sending. At the latest we know when we see the first R00200 coming to members' clients and someone posting, or we can try to find a healthy tooth of Uplinger and ask him if it's save to tell us ;?

For an official status you can visit the Research page and follow the link to the project status or peak in the charts that you can find following "Graphs" in my sig. I reckon June 2009 momentarily.

ciao

From R00176 to R00186 it took 9 days, so unless the batches go out no-sequential, give it another 12-14 before we see the longer tasks with R0020 and up.

Seems not always to be sequential:
