BOINC 6 as service

Hi, I recently receive a message in Boinc for upgrade, so I upgraded from Boinc 5.10.45 to 6.x (don't remember exactly the version, I'm not on the machine right now).
Since that time, I cannot configure Boinc to run as a service. It allowed me to turn on my computer without having the need to connect. But since Boinc 6.x I have to connect onto the computer. Any idea ?
Or do I have to downgrade to 5.10.45 (the one we can download here) ? In that case is it just to re-run the installer ?

Thanks,

Nicolas.

Re: BOINC 6 as service

Rerun the installer and choose "protected", new speak for the "service" install. Probably you have to uninstall before to get the option. Your data will be save.

[Added: The future WCG release will only advise on a new version when WCG considers it mature enough. The Berkeley release jingles on and on every 14 days when there is a new "recommended" point release after point release, so people who followed that were told to e.g. go to 6.2.14 which was retracted within a few days. 6.2.19 is their latest, but WCG is already on 6.2.23 internally to give you an idea.]

cheers

Re: BOINC 6 as service

I'm new to the Boinc client. I have it running on 6 workstations right now that I have manually installed each time.

I have access to many many student labs that I would love to install the client on. How do I go about installing the client on a lab machine so that it will always run in the background. The client should run if someone is logged on or not. No screensaver. Whats the best version of the client for this?

Whats the best thing to do about work the client is processing? I reimage Lab machines all the time. Do you leave it process on the computer or a network share somewhere?

The mas install pdf needs some updates as I have many more questions than answers after reading thu it.

Any help with this would be awesome. Thanks.

Hi, syslock.

How do you reimage machines? Our advice is likely to be different depending on how you do things.

Re: BOINC 6 as service

Hi,

not my field of expanded knowledge, but if talking of DeepFreeze type daily re-imaging, there is discussion on this on the forums.

If you have a large number of devices, you could contact WCG directly and enter a partner relationship. They'll help on mass roll-outs.

Can you post the PDF link to make sure we talk the same document you feel needs revision and can you indicate the type of questions you have.

cheers

Re: BOINC 6 as service

Lab machines are reimaged whenever they need to be because of regular student usage.

Machiens are imaged using Ghost 11.5 (Solution Suite 2.5)
via the ghost console or pxe boot if the os is totally trashed.

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/bg/BOINCMassInstall.pdf

The mass install is what I was reading thu.

The machines are not re-imaged every day but when I need to,
I would hate for the machines work up to that point to be lost.

What version and how do you install the client to run as a service in the background on your master machine? Will the client keep working in the background even if nobody has logged into the workstation?
Not all lab machines are signed into all the time.

Re: BOINC 6 as service

Okay.

In that case, you really don't need to bother with the mass install stuff. Simply add BOINC to your image.

Make sure you are using BOINC 6.2.28, available here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/ms/viewDownloadAgain.do

Install BOINC normally, being sure to select the "Install as a service and run under a restricted account" option. Don't run BOINC! If you do, it will create a host ID, which will then be duplicated. So, leave BOINC in its pre-run state, so that the host ID is created fresh for each imaged PC.

You will want to check some things before rolling out your image:
1. In the BOINC data directory, there should be a file named account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml - if not, ask for help.
2. If there is a file named RebootPending.txt, delete it. That one causes all sorts of problems.
3. There is a file named cc_config.xml. You will want to check the settings, and possibly change a few. In the options section, add <report_results_immediately>1</report_results_immediately> - this will avoid wasting work when it is reimaged.

That should be enough to get you an image to test. Please ask if you need any further help (with proxy settings, for example).

Re: BOINC 6 as service

So after I install it, and Boinc tells me it has to restart the computer.
Can I enter my username and pw someplace or is there a spot in the config file?
