You use your username and password before you download the installer. This allows the installer to create the account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml file, which contains your secure account key. Hopefully, anyway.
Oh, and don't restart the computer, otherwise BOINC will start automatically (since you selected the service option). Let me know if you rebooted, and I will tell you how to undo it. |

Ok on to the firewall...
My problem now is the firewall. Its not a "normal" firewall. Can't just use a UID and PW to get thru it. The 8e6 firewall checks to make sure whatever is going thru it, there is a valid used signed into the network as well. If you try and hit the firewall without a network signon, it will bring up a java window to ask you to validate your network signon and pw. How can I get the client to work with that? |

You may need to set up a proxy server to bypass it.
Otherwise, I simply don't know. Is there a way to authenticate programatically? Create an exception for BOINC? Kevin, do you have any suggestions? |

Not that I'm aware of. And asking the network admins about this would be a low low task on their to-do lists. We use to have a proxy server and it was taken down because its not needed anymore with the 8e6 box. Can the client make sure its loged into a computer before sending and receiving jobs?
Remember back in the NT4 days(Old engineers never die..lol) when you use to have an install process sign in as admin to do the install, then sign back out? Can the BOINC client sign into the machine as whatever user you want it to, have it do its thing, then sign out and keep crunching again in the background? |

I'm not sure what you mean, "signed in". BOINC is running under its own account. You have two options: give this account permission to use the firewall, or configure BOINC to use a different account (one that does have permission).
Since BOINC is running as a service, at no point does it have an interactive login. But surely that's not needed? |

hmmm, from my former employers network it was impossible to get out or in unless the user was in a logged on in an authenticated session. Mr BOINC-master would not get out, but then a BOINC service install would be impossible anyhow.

Didactylos ,
Like in the case of Sekerob, "network it was impossible to get out or in unless the user was in a logged on in an authenticated session" To get out to the internet, the workstation has to be logged in as a valid user, or in an authenticated session. The client running as a service is not the issue. Thats working great. My problem is downloading work and uploading results in the background. As it stands now... Nothing would send/receive until a student logged into a lab workstation. Sure I could have it grab 10 days woth of work and crunch it. I would have to make sure at some point thi that the machine was logged into in order for the results to xfer and more work dl. |

syslock,
Based on a quick read of the purpose of the 8e6, I suspect that the things you are doing could circumvent the purpose of having that device in place. The best thing to do would be to get them to allow access to our IP addresses without authentication 198.20.8.246 and 198.20.8.241. Kevin |

You should also investigate our partner program. It would let your school (i'm assuming it is a school/university) get a little publicity for your contribution and maybe give you a little help getting the network admins to open up the ip addresses for you.
You can read about it here: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewBecomePartner.do |

Never trying to circumvent. Just trying to make a lot of idle workstations work, in the many buildings I support, to help others.
Not sure how the overloards of the network will go for access on those IP's if I don't have a business reason to have access to them. I may be stuck with the client only reporting when someone logs in. Grab 10 days of work and let it keep crunching. Not the best way but it will help get the work done. |
