I've been experiencing a problem with the BOINC Client. The Client suddenly loses connection to the INet then won't reconnect. The only thing I found that works is to close the client down and restart it, which then the Client works fine, until it loses connection again.
I have opened the ports necessary for the Client, but it the problem continues. Any ideas on what's going on here and how to fix it? Bob |

Exactly what error are you seeing?

I'm not seeing any error message, the Client says it lost connection, would I like to retry, I click YES, and it doesn't reconnect, just sits there.

Hello bsadlerjr,
A few years ago I had a problem when my firewall would lose the connection to my router after several hours. The first thing to suspect is your security software. Could you describe your system to us (software, internet connection, etc.)? Lawrence |

bsadlerjr, this isn't a network failure.
It means the core client has crashed, and BOINC Manager can't connect to it. Please will you post the contents of stderrdae.txt so that we can determine the cause of the crash. |

OK, I have a Cable Connection, running a Linksys Cable Router, with all ports open described in the FAQ, then I have Nortons 360 Protection, with all ports open in the Firewall and the program has been added to the security list to run without issue.
The problem seems to exist if I'm in a Graphics intensive program like Photoshop or Texture Maker. At least that's when I see the Client go offline and then just sit there. Then again, that's about all I've been working on the Computer for the last couple of weeks, so it just might be that I'm here at those times and it's nothing more then a coincidence that those are running at the same time. Normally I don't have any other network style programs running, like SKYPE, etc. Only when I'm expecting a call, but I haven't seen the client go offline while SKYPE was open. Hope this helps in some manner! |

OK, I am thinking you want me to check that file AFTER the problem happens, and before I restart things; yes?
If not, then just remember, I'm just cutting and pasting this for you :) Here it is: "Another instance of BOINC is running" I know, nothing big, but I swear that's ALL that is there. Now, this might be a point of interest for you, ever since Firefox upgraded to the newer version, I've been having issues where Firefox wouldn't close out completely. Meaning, it would leave my desktop, but would still showing as a running process in the Task Manager. When this happens, if something ends after the Firefox (and before I got into Task Manager to clear it out) then that also leaves a process running. Perhaps the same is happening here, the client is being hung up by something Firefox has done, and it's still in the process list, so it doesn't restart thinking the client is already running, when it's not. Now that makes sense to me actually, how about to you? Bob |

Hello bsadlerjr,
"Another instance of BOINC is running" There can not be 2 instances of BOINC.exe running and trying to control applications, communicate with the server, etc. So when a second instance was detected, one of them shut down. This means something is wrong with your startup or installation. Lawrence |

OK, I checked last night to be sure the Process List was cleared of any phantom processes running.
When I got up this morning, I found the BOINC client again was saying it wasn't connected, so I looked at the stderrdea or whatever it's spelling is and retrieved the following information: Another instance of BOINC is running Unhandled Exception Detected... - Unhandled Exception Record - Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x00432710 read attempt to address 0x722BF9D1 Engaging BOINC Windows Runtime Debugger... Unhandled Exception Detected... - Unhandled Exception Record - Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x0044612B read attempt to address 0x722BF999 Engaging BOINC Windows Runtime Debugger... I will hold off exiting the Client, in case there's something else you want me to retrieve. |

There should be a stack trace and lots of debug information after the "Engaging BOINC Windows Runtime Debugger..." line.
What version of BOINC are you using? Are you attached to any other projects besides World Community Grid? |
