There is an issue with the Boinc client 6.2.14 which drives me mad.
I have to perform 3 hour lasting telephone calls by skype. I have to switch off Boinc during this time to ensure good voice quality. If I put it to snooze mode it will restart after 30 minutes or one hour. If I put it to snooze mode and shut down Boinc then it will restart in the background, you see it in the task manager only then. Are there any recommendations how to solve this issue? If not you will loose one active member soon. I'm happy to support those projects, but not if they disturb me in my work! ![]() |

That's what snooze does: suspend for one hour only.
If you want to suspend until you resume manually, then you have to go to the advanced view and select "Suspend" from the Activity menu. It's a common confusion; no need to feel bad about it. |

Hi,
----------------------------------------First off, 6.2.14 is Caterpillar P. Either get 6.2.19, which is bound to get ditched for a newer point release or downgrade to the WCG supported release 5.10.45. If you want to stop BOINC indefinitely, go to the BOINCmgr Activity menu and select the "Suspend" option. For resume, change the activity option again to "Run based on preferences" or "Run always". There is in the future a function coming that will pause BOINC automatically when selected programs are loaded, so in your case "Skype" could be added to that list... maybe BOINC 6.4 which is still some months away if not longer. cheers

So there is a difference if I choose "snooze" from the task bar or in the activity menu of the Boinc client???
I activated the snooze in the task bar. When I go to the activity menu it's on "suspend", too. If I go to the menu Advanced -> "shut down connected client", will this shut down the client until I restart it manually or will it restart in the background after one hour? |

It's weird, we know... snooze via the systray icon activates suspend in the menu. The taskbar pop up actual indicated if the snooze is a temporary or the time limited. When Grayed it's suspended for ever, if tick mark appears it's suspended for 60 minutes :D
----------------------------------------Exiting BOINCmgr does not unload the core client if you installed as service/protected. Use the advanced menu and select "shut down connected client".

Ah, Berkeley.... piling on the new features without bothering to fix the existing broken ones.
Snooze is fairly clear. When you hit snooze on your alarm clock, you expect to be woken up again. Pause in the simple view also snoozes. That has to be a bug! Suspend in the advanced view reflects the current state, not the current selection. Again, a bug, caused by the total mess that is used to represent state internally. Be careful using "shut down connected client". It is very difficult to restart if you do this. Again, a BOINC failing. BOINC: bringing you new bugs with every new version. Use 5.10.45 - after 45 releases, at least the *worst* bugs are gone. |

When I first saw Boinc 6.x appear, I thought about (downgrading) my 5.10.45 to the new and fancy 6.x. Fortunately, I paused for a moment to consider what I was doing, which was crunching for WCG and ponder what possibly could go wrong. Since 5.10.45 had been running for over 100 days by that time and I had not had a single Boinc error, I decided to happily wait, and here I am with good old 5.10.45 and over 1 million points. Good decision.
---------------------------------------- And on another note, the CAs and Techs are also happy that I am not trying to force them to support an unsupportable platform ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 6, 2008 5:53:02 PM] |
