Yeah, I have an A64 Winchester 3500+ and it's very nice. I put a big Zalmann copper cooler on it, and told the mobo to keep the CPU to under 50C. It's all housed in an Antec Sonata case, designed for quiet operation with one 120mm fan.
It's the quietest computer I've owned since my Atari ST. One of the coolest too... I can put my hand up to the exhaust port at the back of it after crunching 24/7 and it's barely warm. Now if I start playing a serious FPS game, on the other hand, my video card takes up the thermal slack... |

My P4 3Ghz (IBM Thinkpad G40) used to reach 67°C at full spped. I use Threadmaster to clamp Rosetta to 60% CPU utilisation, now it's at 59%C. My buddy has a similar build, François. He got tired of running at less than 100%, 24/7, so he took off the side service panel and turned off Threadmaster. Nothing but mid 40s ever since. Hi, I also am running a Thinkpad G40, and several other thinkpads. How / where do you measure the processor temperature?

Hello jimcooper,
I have never had a Thinkpad, but I would assume that the diagnostic software that came with your system would include a temperature monitor. Failing that, look at 'Useful Utilities' at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490 Maybe Motherboard Monitor or Speed Fan would work, though laptops often require manufacturer-specific diagnostics. This is why I waited for some Thinkpad owner to jump in with the correct information. mycrofth |
