Re: BOINC client locking up my system

I downloaded the client last week after joining so I assume I have the latest.

Hi relic,
try BOINC version 5.10.45 (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php). The latest version might still have problems.

cheers

Re: BOINC client locking up my system

From bad news to worse...
Both my Vista x64 (one Intel and one NVidia chipset) systems have the identical problem with the system locking up when running the BOINC client.

My two x86 Vistas work fine, but I'm looking for a project where I can run all my boxes. Is this just the wrong project or is there a work around for x64 systems?

Thanks,
relic

Re: BOINC client locking up my system

Hi relic[H],
This is a new problem to me. Without any prior examples to guide me, I start off with asking what security programs are running on thee systems?

Lawrence

Added: We have recently had a member who traced his random errors to a bank of memory, even though it ran Prime 95 and memory tests without problems.

Boinc works just fine with 64Bit systems, I have been running it on them for ages without a problem....I take it you are using the 64Bit Boinc client?

Re: BOINC client locking up my system

Hi Lawrence, thanks for trying to help. :)

I've tried the BOINC client on several Vista systems. So far it is only freezing the two x64 systems.

The AV is AVG on one and Symantec Client Security (Enterprise) on the other. (Unfortunately disabling AV for testing is not an acceptable option.)

Most of the Vista security features are disabled and the Vista firewall is turned off. (We're behind a tight corporate firewall)

As two dissimilar hardware configurations have an identical problem that only occurs when running the BOINC software I am going to discount the possibility that it is a hardware problem unless the 8800GT Video cards are a possible issue.

8800GTs are also installed in the non-freezing 32-bit systems, but obviously they are using a 32-bit driver rather than 64-bit drivers used in the two Vista x64 systems.

All four systems are running the latest NVidia CUDA drivers if that helps.

The systems will sometimes run for a few minutes, occasionally for an hour or two then freeze without any warning or symptoms. The keyboard locks mid-word, the mouse freezes and Everest Ultimate (hardware monitoring software) stops updating. Nothing in the event logs...the system just locks.

Prior to the lockup the systems are running at reasonable temps and the CPU loads are close to those set in the BOINC manager. Available RAM is plentiful and the Voltages are nominal. It's easy to see how the system was doing right at lockup since Everest freezes when the screen does. ;)

Any ideas? I don't have enough experience with BOINC to even have a clue.

Regards,
relic

Yep, I tried the 5.10.45 downloaded from here and the x64 6.2.19 (from Berkley) clients.

It doesn't help to tell me it "works fine", obviously it doesn't or I wouldn't be posting here. I'd certainly appreciate it if you have anything helpful to add to the troubleshooting.

Thanks and Regards,
relic

Re: BOINC client locking up my system

What I was saying was Boinc does work fine with 64bit systems in response to your 'Is this the wrong project or is there a workaround for x64 systems' quote.

There is no need for a 'workaround' as it does work fine, but obviously there is something specific with the setup of your systems that is not allowing it to, rather than with the Boinc client itself working with a 64bit OS.

Unfortunately diagnosing exactly what it is not easy, and as has already been suggested it is often a case of just disabling things one by one until you reach the issue. Obviously in your case doing that in itself causes problems due to being in a corporate setup where certain tests cannot be done for security reasons.

Re: BOINC client locking up my system

Try turning off video acceleration. Given the details you provided, I am reasonably sure the graphics drivers are the problem, as you suspect.

We have seen serious problems with one driver version, so it comes as little surprise to see it again. The last incidence was only solved by an updated graphics driver.

You seem to be blessed with a fair few computers. Maybe you could swap the graphics card? Please let us know whether this makes a difference.

Given your situation, I suggest you use BOINC 5.10.45. Berkeley are adding CUDA support, and it is possible that the 6.2 client contains a few half-finished CUDA related items.

Re: BOINC client locking up my system

Hi relic[H],
I am not using the screen saver or any graphics features that I am aware of, just a system try icon that starts on login. Are there graphics to turn off than I don't know about?

This stopped me from thinking about graphics, but Didactylos is right. BOINC 6 is trying to add minimal CUDA support, which means there may be buggy code interacting with your CUDA drivers. BOINC 5 does not have any CUDA interfaces.

Re: BOINC client locking up my system

I have tried both the v5 and v6 clients. I can use any one that you suggest, it doesn't matter to me. V6 seemed to lockup much sooner than v5, but it's always been a bit random so I can't say that with any certainty.

Understandably for a business, changing the configurations of these systems isn't an option. I can't disable video acceleration or remove the CUDA drivers. I could swap video cards, but they're all 8800GTs all running the same drivers (specific for x86 or x64).

I could install a different video driver version if anyone has specific advise on a a CUDA version that Boinc doesn't interfere with, but I can't just make random changes.

Unfortunately, it seems from what I'm hearing that there is no way to configure Boinc, it only works on select configurations?

I'm hopeful there's a workaround, but it appears unlikely given the advise I'm seeing which all seems focused on changing our configuration. sad
