BOINC client locking up my system

Q6600
8GB
Vista x64

I recently switched this box from running f@h SMP. It was very stable at 100% CPU usage but I got tired of baby sitting the bad Work Units so I changed it to WCG.

Unfortunately this client locks the system up at random times. No keyboard, mouse or video update...everything freezes and requires a reboot. I turned down the CPU usage to 50% but the problem still exists.

The system is a proven stable box that runs other DC projects without issue. A nearly identical system (also a convert from f@h SMP)with 4GB and Vista x32 runs the client fine.

Any ideas?

Regards,
relic

hmmm, what client version have you installed and have you followed our FAQ in the Start Here forum on how best to install on Vista? My Vista Q6600 ticks and ticks and ticks.

Re: BOINC client locking up my system

Sekerob,

Yes, I installed on two systems following the FAQ because I'm new to the project and didn't know what to do.

I downloaded the client last week after joining so I assume I have the latest. I can't check as I uninstalled it after the constant lockups. I would like to get it running, but it must be reliable before I will reload it.

As I said in my first post the 32bit (4GB) system runs fine, the 64bit (8GB) system randomly locks solid. Both are identical hardware differing only in the RAM size and OS version. Both have been tested running 2x F@H SMP client + 1x GPU for months prior to running BOINC so I'm certain they are rock solid for DC.

I was hoping there was an easy anwer that I had missed while searching the forums. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. :)

Regards,
relic

I wish I could share your confidence, but I have seen this before - one particular project exposes an existing hardware problem that never showed up in stress tests.

Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to get a definitive answer. The most important question we can ask is what WCG projects are you running? Are you running the same project on all cores?

Or, maybe it is a newly developed fault. Has a fan failed?

Re: BOINC client locking up my system

Hehe, no the system is still rock stable running at 100% load on F@H. (running now as we I type this on the system) WCG locks up when set to 60% CPU use.

I use Everest Ultimate to monitor the hardware. The temps are fine and the % CPU usage is consistant with the settings in the client. (I've tried adjusting the CPU % settings to see if it would run at lower settings)

I've been DCing a long time and always check the hardware first in these situations. I am quite certain this is a client or a configuration issue, but I don't know where to start troubleshooting since I am new to the BOINC client.

There is no point running at less than 100% unless you have a heating issue (the 60% is designed to be safe for laptops).

All previous non-hardware problems have been traceable to graphics drivers. Are you using any of the BOINC graphics features?

Is the system overclocked? This should have been my first question.

Re: BOINC client locking up my system

Hey, thanks for replying so quickly, I appreciate it very much.

The system was OCed but I turned it down to stock prior to loading the BOINC client because I was unfamiliar with it. (Set OC back to stock. rule #1 of DC troubleshooting right? ;) )

I tested it running it at lower % to watch the temps and cpu usage, I agree that there's no sense running it lower, but since the client wasn't stable I tested it lower.

I am not using the screen saver or any graphics features that I am aware of, just a system try icon that starts on login. Are there graphics to turn off than I don't know about?

Both systems use NVidia 8800GTs with similar drivers versions (64-bit vs 32-bit).

Re: BOINC client locking up my system

The BOINC CPU throttle is binary. You will see a sawtooth profile if you graph it. It is worth going to 100% just to rule out any impact the throttle may have.

Still need to know which WCG projects you are running. You may want to try them all in turn, and see whether one in particular causes a problem.
