I have been looking at some cpus that run cool without excessive (or any) modifications that are relatively inexpensive. At Newegg I found an AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2400+, 1.83,GHz, 266 MHz FSB, 512K L2 Cache Processor, 35 Watt, -OEM for under $100 that seems to run very cool out of the box. I'll (a friend, actually) probably install some Thermaltake heat sinks just as a precautionary measure.
Has anyone used this or a similar processor and how is it working out? |

The AMD Mobile line is fairly new. In servers, 35 watt CPUs and 55 watt CPUs are considered premium 'low heat' chips that you pay a slight premium for. The Intel P4 line has many processor chips running at 90 watts and higher. Any heat sink on a 35 watt chip should work as long as there is good thermal contact.

Thanks, Lawrence.
After listening to a good deal of comments on a few sites, the 55w cpus seem to run a bit hotter than the 35w mobile. Also, the die temp on the 35w M is 100C. I just wanted to make certain that there was nothing that I was missing. |

Hi julied
----------------------------------------I bought a 45w 2600+ Mobile from new egg that ran so well that I sent for two more. They run cool {and very fast if you want to clock them.} I like them in the Abit MotherBoards better than the Asus Brand. Heres a photo of the Stats of some 2700MHz CPU abuse (a water cooled (Ice Bath)) just for fun. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 21, 2005 6:14:47 AM] |

Thanks, Billy Bob. Impressive, I must say. I'll have to check some reviews and see how they fare with a good heatsink/fan. An Ice Bath on a 45W mobile processor - does your temp even change from idle to full load?
Why the preference for the Abit mobo? I'm new at this and appreciate the feedback and tips. |

Hi julied
LOL Yes no load was down around 60F with the Ice but I didn't stay at no load to see if it would go below 50F. I like the Abit nf7 because they seem to over clock better and they are (now) inexpensive. The CPU voltage goes higher and the Board has built in warning sounds for overheat! I run DDR3500 in them too. Rockets! At 2500Mhz you can run cheaper $80 Video cards with only 64Mb mem! Mine scored =2A 3700+! (ON AIR not WATER!) My fastest Cruncher is Bob.... My fastest Cruncher is Bob.... Bob: 115days 74,646points 489results Nice!!! A 2600+ 45w mobile pushed to 2500Mhz from NewEgg of course LOL Yes I'm a fan of NewEgg LOL Crunch on! Yeah, I was having a tough time choosing between the 2600+ 45W and the 2400+ 35W. In the end I had to go with the 2400+. After reading all the reviews it seems that the 2400+ is considerably easier to O/C, IF I ever decide to take the plunge. Also, if the reviewers are accurate, they both seem to clock out at about the same Mhz. (I assume because a 35W cpu generates less heat than a 45W cpu?). For now, though, I need to catch up on everything else in my life! Newegg certainly has awesome prices and incredibly good service. Even with the Arctic Silver 5 I was under $100 to the door. I'm looking forward to installing everything this weekend. Thanks for the encouragement and tips, Billy Bob. |

Hi,
My Athlon64 3000+ runs full speed, 10% overclocked, at 46°C. Reducing memory clock from DDR400 to 333, it drops to 37°C -- Athlon 64 have the memory controller in the CPU chip. My P4 3Ghz (IBM Thinkpad G40) used to reach 67°C at full spped. I use Threadmaster to clamp Rosetta to 60% CPU utilisation, now it's at 59%C. François |

I run an AMD64 3000+ with the retail heatsink and it's pretty cool (since it's only running @ 2GHz). I run the machine 24/7 and the temps never get anywhere near what you would consider "high". I can't tell you the temp at the moment since I'm not at the machine.
----------------------------------------I highly recommend AMD64 chips or AMD mobile chips.

If you're thinking about AMD64, my suggestion is to go for Winchester core - runs really cold (mine is running @ 2.26GHz with stock cooling and never even reached 45°C!!!) and is extremely fast (avarage: 4h 26m per result).
