Hello all. I have BOINC on four boxs. They've all been running fine except for one, lately, is always stuck on a screen that says "Waiting to contact project servers." The message never goes away and it never downloads a new work unit. It has in the past worked without any issue.
Machine specifics: WindowsXP, SP2 3Ghz Processor 4GB RAM Cable modem connection Anyone know what I should try? I've tried the firewall, but having it on or off doesn't have any effect. Thank you. |

Hello ZABA77,
Could you give us some more information to work with? For example, it would be helpful if you rebooted and then posted the Messages tab here. Also, what security software do you use? Finally, describe your internet connection. Is this same connection used by your other three BOINC machines? Lawrence |

There are several draft FAQ's around for members to comment on. One of them is on this topic and can be found here:

Hello ZABA77, Could you give us some more information to work with? Thanks for the reply. More info below. For example, it would be helpful if you rebooted and then posted the Messages tab here. See below. Also, what security software do you use? Nortan Anti-Virus for antivirus and Windows firewall for firewall. Finally, describe your internet connection. Is this same connection used by your other three BOINC machines? Lawrence Yes. All machines are on the same ISP. Two are at one location, and two at another. I just checked and now it is working. I've been getting that error for weeks and it suddenly started to work today. The only thing I tried before posting was Advanced > Projects > Update. But that was early this morning and did not produce any results. IIRC, I've tried this several times before too. Anywho, thanks for the help, but it appears to be resolved for the moment. Message are posted below in the event this thread helps someone else out. 9/11/2008 1:01:32 PM||Starting BOINC client version 5.10.45 for windows_intelx86 9/11/2008 1:01:32 PM||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 9/11/2008 1:01:32 PM||Libraries: libcurl/7.18.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8e zlib/1.2.3 9/11/2008 1:01:32 PM||Data directory: C:\ZA\BOINC 9/11/2008 1:01:34 PM||Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 1] 9/11/2008 1:01:34 PM||Processor features: fpu tsc sse sse2 mmx 9/11/2008 1:01:34 PM||OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Professional Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00) 9/11/2008 1:01:34 PM||Memory: 3.12 GB physical, 3.70 GB virtual 9/11/2008 1:01:34 PM||Disk: 74.52 GB total, 31.87 GB free 9/11/2008 1:01:34 PM||Local time is UTC -7 hours 9/11/2008 1:01:34 PM|World Community Grid|URL: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID: 569964; location: (none); project prefs: default 9/11/2008 1:01:34 PM||General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 31-Dec-1969 16:00:01) 9/11/2008 1:01:34 PM||Host location: none 9/11/2008 1:01:34 PM||General prefs: using your defaults 9/11/2008 1:01:34 PM||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 1595.72MB 9/11/2008 1:01:34 PM||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 2872.29MB 9/11/2008 1:01:34 PM||Preferences limit disk usage to 1.86GB 9/12/2008 7:56:57 AM|World Community Grid|Fetching scheduler list 9/12/2008 10:56:23 AM|World Community Grid|Fetching scheduler list 9/12/2008 10:56:28 AM|World Community Grid|Master file download succeeded 9/12/2008 10:56:33 AM|World Community Grid|Sending scheduler request: Requested by project. Hello ZABA77,
What does the behaviour indicate? Since I have never seen this before, I can not guess. But it is wrong. There is a way to get the BOINC Manager to show more debug info in the Messages tab. Re: Logging Debug Messages for BOINC The cc_config.xml file in the BOINC directory can be used to force BOINC to log a very verbose set of debug messages. This is explained on the BOINC site at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration For example, using a text editor to insert <checkpoint_debug>1</checkpoint_debug> into the cc_config.xml file will cause BOINC 5.10 to log the checkpoints in the Messages tab and in file stderrdae.txt If you want to continue, you will eventually end up posting your problem on the BOINC site. But this will give us more information to query the developers with. Lawrence |
