Device manager, actually being able to manage devices.

So, I'm sure someone's asked for this to be implemented many times, and I'm sure that there is some technical reason as for why it hasn't been done yet, but I would REALLY like to unregister, or at a very minimum have them listed as active/inactive, devices that A. Are no longer in use, and B. The same device I'm currently running on b/c I was a goof and never backed anything up for a windows reload. The faq on the subject says that this feature is " not available at this time " which 3 years ago, insinuated that they planned on making it available. So... when?

Re: Device manager, actually being able to manage devices.

It doesn't work that way.

Each device has associated with it all the work you did using it. Any relationship with actual computers is entirely coincidental.

Given this, we would like an active device count so that we have an accurate idea of the actual number of computers. But this has nothing to do with removing devices.

If you look at your device manager list, you will see that old, inactive devices ARE filtered out. They just aren't removed from the total count of devices, which is the feature we would like to have added.

Re: Device manager, actually being able to manage devices.

So "device" really refers to an active installation of the software, with no connection whatsoever to any hardware?

I have reinstalled my OS, but not replaced any hardware. I named everything exactly as it was before, but reinstalled BOINC from scratch. I was then listed as having one more device than before, with the computer name listed twice in the device statistics.

Yes.

World Community Grid will try and reassign the same device ID if you reinstall, but it only works if absolutely nothing has changed.
