Hi guys,
I've just moved from a laptop with Windows to a laptop with Linux on it. I'm only learning with Linux at the moment and am stuck as to how to get BOINC 6.2.15 installed. Doesn't seem to be as simple as clickyty click as on Windows? Help very much appreciated. Gav. |

Use your package manager to install the boinc-client and boinc-manager packages (5.10.45). I'm not familiar with Red Hat, so I can't really be more specific.
----------------------------------------edit: stares, we don't really refer to that document any more. It's out of date. Installing using a package is easier and safer, wherever possible. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Sep 3, 2008 11:53:15 AM] |

Thanks for the replies guys.
I have managed to install it (I think) with the help of a more Linux experienced friend. Now I have in my /home/gav/Desktop/BOINC folder: binstall.sh boincmgr ca-bundle.crt locale time_stats_log boinc boincmgr.16x16.png client_state_prev.xml lockfile boinccmd boincmgr.32x32.png client_state.xml run_client boinc_cmd boincmgr.48x48.png gui_rpc_auth.cfg run_manager If I run boincmgr or run_manager (why do I need to specify the entire path??) then I get the familiar looking interface but if fails with "unable to connect to the core". If I run boinc or run_client I get: 03-Sep-2008 14:34:23 [---] Starting BOINC client version 6.2.15 for i686-pc-linux-gnu 03-Sep-2008 14:34:23 [---] log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 03-Sep-2008 14:34:23 [---] Libraries: libcurl/7.18.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8g zlib/1.2.3 c-ares/1.5.1 03-Sep-2008 14:34:23 [---] Data directory: /home/gav/Desktop/BOINC 03-Sep-2008 14:34:23 [---] Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.00GHz [Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 11] 03-Sep-2008 14:34:23 [---] Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe nx lm constant_tsc ida pni monitor ds_cpl vmx est tm2 cx16 xtpr lahf_lm 03-Sep-2008 14:34:23 [---] OS: Linux: 2.6.18-92.el5 03-Sep-2008 14:34:23 [---] Memory: 1.94 GB physical, 1.00 GB virtual 03-Sep-2008 14:34:23 [---] Disk: 107.31 GB total, 96.27 GB free 03-Sep-2008 14:34:23 [---] Local time is UTC +1 hours 03-Sep-2008 14:34:23 [---] No coprocessors 03-Sep-2008 14:34:23 [---] No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults 03-Sep-2008 14:34:23 [---] Preferences limit memory usage when active to 993.01MB 03-Sep-2008 14:34:23 [---] Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 1787.41MB 03-Sep-2008 14:34:23 [---] Preferences limit disk usage to 9.31GB 03-Sep-2008 14:34:52 [---] [error] GUI RPC bind failed: 98 Why can't it be simple like in Windows? Hence the advice to use your package manager.

yum install boinc_manager and
yum install boinc_client don't find anything that's why I didn't/can't use package manager. |

It's boinc-client and boinc-manager - hyphen, not underscore. You may need to try the Fedora repository if yours doesn't have it.
Sorry I can't give better advice, I have never used your distro. |

Sorry, my fault, I meant boinc-manager and boinc-client aren't found in the package.

I *think* that this means that you already have a BOINC client running somewhere.
Do a ps -ax|grep boinc and see if there is something running. Did you run boincmgr to configure the wcg project ? (./run_manager in the BOINC directory). After you have done this (and stopped the boincmgr), you can start the boinc executable without a graphical interface. |

This what I got running the command you suggested:
[gav@lc4eb6031761084 8gjud5t9.default]# ps -ax|grep boinc Warning: bad syntax, perhaps a bogus '-'? See /usr/share/doc/procps-3.2.7/FAQ 708 ? S 2:16 /home/gav/Desktop/BOINC/boinc 1956 pts/1 S+ 0:00 grep boinc Running the run_manager brings up the graphic but shows a red X and "unable to connect to the core client". Why is this so difficult to get installed on Linux? Nowhere have I been able to configure anything or put in my details. Gav. |
