Have you done "top" to check what processes run. Does the BOINC daemon / Core client run and it just being that your BOINCmgr with the red dot is not permitted to connect to the core client? What's the CPU use like.... near ~60 to 100% or just the typical user typing away level ~5-10% (my process explorer shows ~3% when BOINC is paused)

Hi,
To be honest, I don't really understand much of what's going on. I'm a dab hand with Windows and put Linux on the machine with the aim of learning how to use it and I have been very unimpressed with it so far. For example, it took me half a day to get my Firefox bookmarks copied over because of mounting file systems, having to be root, problems with root then being the owner, and finally permissions!! Can I not just download, double click and install like on Windows? If not why not? I have a BOINC folder on my desktop with these files in it: binstall.sh boincmgr.16x16.png client_state.xml run_manager boinc boincmgr.32x32.png gui_rpc_auth.cfg time_stats_log boinccmd boincmgr.48x48.png locale boinc_cmd ca-bundle.crt lockfile boincmgr client_state_prev.xml run_client What do I need to do to get this running? </frustration> Gav |

Since you can't find the package in your package manager, I suggest you get it from here: http://pirates.spy-hill.net/help/linux-rpm.html
If you aren't (yet) comfortable with the command line, then using a package is the only sensible approach. Trying to do everything manually causes pain even for experts. |

Grabbed boinc_client-5.10.21-10.i686.rpm from http://pirates.spy-hill.net/download/RPMS/
When I run boincmgr it says "Authorisation failed connecting to running client. Make sure you start this program in the same directory as the client". Where has the program been installed? It's not in /var/lib/boinc as suggested. When I try to attach a project from the Tools menu, I'm told to connect to a computer under Advanced/Select Computer and use localhost. When I do this, I am told that the password is incorrect. I have tried blank, my password and the root password and each time I am told that the password is incorrect......... Am I nearly there because to be perfectly honest, I am beginning to regret trying to install this piece of software. In fact, I am beginning to regret installing Linux altogether. It seems to me it has a long, long way to go before it becomes anything like user friendly! Gav. |

If you do it like you just did trying to connect, leave both fields blank and report back.

hostname <blank> password <blank> gives "Authorisation failed connecting to running client. Make sure you start this program in the same directory as the client".

OK - where do I find that?
Might be scrapping the OS and going back to Windows. I've been extremely disappointed with the whole experience to be honest. I can't understand why installed programs don't appear on desktop/programs menu and I have to hunt around the whole OS trying to track them down. Can't even get MP3s to play either. Gav |

Sorry, I don't know where it is installed to.
I have a couple of very compelling reasons to use Windows (the real thing, not Wine), but I also need to use Linux now and then. To get around this, I run Linux in a virtual machine under Windows. You might want to give that a try, if you want to keep playing around with Linux. I use Microsoft Virtual PC (which is free), but there are a couple of alternatives out there. |

Yeah, might have to do just that. Want to learn Linux but think I may be out of my depth here!
Thanks for the help and advice! Gav. |
