For the last 2 days my boinc client has been hung up on"Waiting to contact project servers". My web browser appears to be fine as well as other programs that connect to the net. Any ideas as to whats going on?

Re: Contacting Project Server Problem

Did you try the Update button in the Projects Tab of the BOINCmgr Advanced view?

If you have no work in the Tasks tab to report or complete try detaching from WCG and "Attach to project" via the Tools menu, selecting WCG from the list.

Basic instruction on Simple and Advanced view you find here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/The_BOINC_Manager

Re: Contacting Project Server Problem

Let us know if using the Update in the Advanced View doesn't work. It looks like you've got 3 work units still In Progress. Are those finished already and waiting to be reported?

Re: Contacting Project Server Problem

THIS IS A DRAFT FAQ. "Waiting to contact project servers" Please help and share with us what fixed the problem if you experienced this.
----------------------------------
In principle this should be a self resolving issue, but if not there are various things that can be checked:
  • The message log after hitting the Update button **, when WCG has been selecting in the Projects Tab of BOINC Manager (BM).

    Message samples:

    • 8/29/2008 2:47:41 PM|WCG|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
8/29/2008 2:47:42 PM||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
8/29/2008 2:47:43 PM||BOINC can't access Internet - check network connection or proxy configuration.
      8/29/2008 2:47:46 PM|WCG|Scheduler request failed: Couldn't resolve host name
    • 8/29/2008 2:53:10 PM|WCG|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
      8/29/2008 2:53:15 PM|WCG|Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks
  • Did you try from the BM's Advanced menu with Retry Communication (v 5.10 and lower) or Do Network Communication (v 6.2 and higher)?

  • Does it resolve if you change in the Activity menu to Network activity always available?

  • Were any changes/updates made to the Antivirus/Firewall/Proxy Settings, to include server side if there is any involved to get onto the internet? WCG needs to be able to get through over port 80 and 443 to IP 129.33.89.133+134

  • Did you Confirm that the problem machine allows you to visit with web browser the My Grid page and are able to sign in?

  • Is the project URL address correct? The proper address should be http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/. If not correct, detach from WCG in the Project Tab of BM and reattach via the Tools menu Attach to Project by selecting WCG from the drop down list and entering your member name and password.

Warning: Detaching looses all work in progress for this project!
Hibernating or putting a device in Standby has for some caused hanging. Expired DNS (IP) information BOINC is (depending on version) still remembering, could be the cause. Ultimately a proper shutdown and restart of the computer may solve the issue.

If no solution is found, posting the Message log detail from the Client where it starts to attempt to communicate all the way to the end of the message log will allow support to analysis the problem. Provide as much information as you can of what was already done, so we can eliminate these from things to check.

** Basic instruction on using the Simple view and Advanced view you find in the BOINC Manager official wiki.
-------------------------------

Please share with us what solved the issue if ever you experienced this problem!

thanks

Re: Contacting Project Server Problem

Hello SoRn159
Did your host hibernate or experience some power failures within the last two days?
Some weeks ago, I mentioned that - for unknown reasons - my hosts, running Boind 5.10.45, are not able to use network connections after a hibernating, although the other applications were able to work with the network.
I've experienced this situation several times within the last 3 or 6 months. In this case, only a complete reboot (host cold start) does help. Afterwards, Boinc is working again as fine and accurate as usual.
I hope it can help you.
Cheers,
Yves
