Hi there,
I installed boinc few days ago and boinc is always running. But there have been no results yet. I think every time i restart my computer boinc restarts the task again. Is it possible? My cpu is running high, so i gues, something is working. The time remaining rests on about 6,5 hrs, but even if the pc has run longer than 6 hrs, the elapsed time was not more than 40 min. Whats wrong? It is my first task. The project is faah, i use windows xp, avira antivir personal free, and the windows firewall. thank you for your help |

Hello and welcome 27waterboy!
----------------------------------------One explanation might be that you use your PC in very short sessions and that this FAAH WU has some difficulty to reach the next checkpoint before you switch off your PC. In that case you might try to change your profile to select only projects with frequent checkpointing, namely DDDT or Rice. But since you say that you have tried at least once to leave your PC running 6 hours consecutively there is another possibility which is that Boinc is not allowed to use enough CPU while you are using your PC. First, check in your profile or in your local preferences that the "Use no more than xx% of processor time" parameter is not set too low. Unless you are using a laptop with cooling problems there is no obvious reason to not set it to 100 % (Boinc is running at the lowest priority). Next, using TaskManager, check that you have not some other process which is pulling out all of your CPU power. That can be some background process, or a task that you don't use but which is looping on its menu to see if you are wanting something. Another candidate is an internet browser left on one of these home pages which look like Christmas trees with flashing objects all over the place. Remember that Boinc is running at the lowest priority, so it will always let any other process take everything they want, useful or not. Cheers. Jean. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by JmBoullier at Aug 25, 2008 4:45:00 PM] |

I had the same problem on my laptop. I use my laptop (dell inspiron 6000) for web browsing. It had firefox on all the time and I was wondering why it wasn't returning any results. sure enough firefox was using 98% of my CPU power, Now I close tabs that have lots of fancy javascripts on it before I go to bed. Problem fixed :D

Hi guys,
thanks for your suggestions. 1. I set at my preferences the CPU usage up to 100 % 2. I looked at process xp (better than taskmanager, because it shows me detailed information for every single task) to see which task is using the CPU, I found out that boinc is using it most of the time with 80% or more 3. I took notes of the process the last days, here are the results: 1st collum:Date and Time 2nd collum: Elapsed Time 3rd collum: Remaining Time 4rd collumg: Progress 25.8.2008 19:31 00:37:00 ? ? 25.8.2008 19:56 00:51:00 06:31:00 ? 25.8.2008 22:37 03:15:00 08:09:00 ? 26.8.2008 08:38 02:33:00 07:33:00 10,5% 26.8.2008 09:04 02:51:00 08:07:00 8,4% 26.8.2008 10:10 03:39:00 08:34:00 10,3% 26.8.2008 11:00 04:16:00 08:54:00 11,7% 26.8.2008 11:46 04:52:00 09:12:00 13,1% 26.8.2008 15:29 05:15:00 09:20:00 14,2% 26.8.2008 15:43 05:32:00 09:28:00 15,0% 26.8.2008 16:23 05:54:00 09:35:00 16,1% 26.8.2008 16:59 06:18:00 09:44:00 17,2% 26.8.2008 17:37 06:46:00 09:55:00 18,3% 26.8.2008 19:34 06:54:00 09:56:00 18,9% 26.8.2008 20:15 07:14:00 10:05:00 19,5% 26.8.2008 22:05 08:21:00 10:33:00 21,8% 27.8.2008 09:31 05:50:00 09:33:00 15,9% 27.8.2008 09:52 06:03:00 09:39:00 16,4% 27.8.2008 11:06 06:56:00 10:04:00 18,2% 27.8.2008 12:10 07:46:00 10:25:00 20,0% 27.8.2008 17:05 05:37:00 08:40:00 20,1% 27.8.2008 17:05 05:56:00 09:36:00 16,2% Restart PC at 26.8.2008 08:38 26.8.2008 15:29 27.8.2008 09:31 27.8.2008 17:05 I dont use CPU using SW. Just Word, Excel and firefox (meebo.com) process xp says that firefox is just using a little of the cpu (ca. 30% every minute, 3% the rest of time) I think the best is to choose DDDT or Rice the next time and see what happens. Or is there sth else I can do? cheers |

Problem fixed :D No idea which Firefox you refer to, but 2 and before just needed minimizing to Startbar to get rid of most of the churning and memory use, but it would even when minimized gradually creep back up. FFx (Edit: read FFX 3) is a dream in terms of speed, CPUuse and memory efficiency. Oh, and there are some add-ons for FFx that are badly behaved and sucking CPU time. Again in FFx 3 I see little, particularly when minimized.

Thank you for providing this info which shows that work is really progressing slowly.
----------------------------------------Just a few comments: 1. I am a little surprised with your restart at 15:29 on the 26th. We should see figures going back to the previous checkpoint (10.5 % probably) since it has not reached the 15.9 % one which is used twice on the 27th. But maybe the restart actually took place around 16:20. No problem anyway. 2. I am wondering if you might be one of the few members who have still a "very long FAAH WU" in progress (see other threads with this title for details). In that case if I were you I would update my profile to DDDT (frequent checkpoint and short WUs) and then abort the FAAH task. With the current draining of the dual-redundancy FAAH WUs still in the clients you have a high probability to either never finish this WU, or to return it when other "emergency" WUs will have already returned the results. If you can, please give us the name of your FAAH WU to let us see if it was really one of the big monsters. With your first DDDT WU you will quickly see if things are going fine or if you still have some other problem. Please keep us informed of the outcome, either good or bad. Next if things are OK you will be able to select other projects depending on your usual schedules and preferences. Cheers. Jean. |

You could try to add the checkpoint_debug log flag in the cc_config.xml file. This will cause Boinc to write a line to the log every time a checkpoint is reached.
----------------------------------------My cc_config.xml: <cc_config> I suggest you keep a backup of your own xx_config.xml file before changing it in case you break it. Restart Boinc after changing the xml file so Boinc will pick up the change. EDIT: I just noticed there is a FAQ on this aswell: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=11332 [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Aug 28, 2008 6:42:16 AM] |
