Re: Help needed to tranport an installation

Another question

Thanks JP but looking at the thread recommended, it seems only that they want to put down BOINC, not address the question at hand. I guess I'll just get out my USB IDE/SATA adapter and copy/paste all 55 files/folders to the new drive. I guess my real question is the regular BOINC folder is still in program files but what neccesary files/folders are someplace else (if any). Oh well.

Try this question,
XP Pro...Administrator is the only profile I have but whenever there's a reboot, I have to hit enter when it asks for a password (I did not name a password) to get the machine to finish booting. How can I make these machines with PRO boot up automatically (if I'm not home when they reboot, they just sit there and I lose crunch time)

So why dosn't the guy ask his own question in this thread instead of asking in the Team thread and getting someone else to ask, then post the answer in the team thread, then get another question in the team thread, then that question posted into this thread and then the answer.........see what I mean? A total waste of storeage space on the servers..... crying

Re: Help needed to tranport an installation

Auto-log in (Seeing an answer to that in the Edwardians team thread v.v. acpartsman query) should be followed by an automated log out using Windows-key+L if the objective is to have Startup folder short cuts execute, yet be save that any random booter gets access to the system. Quite superfluous as the Service (protected) install of BOINC would cause BOINC to run even before log-in (see Ingleside's observation).

But, given BOINC is seeking to install and use special purpose accounts to increase safety in a type of Sand Box environment, not totally, a full install on the target machine is strongly recommended. The control was mentioned <data_dir> and the location assigned by BOINC can be seen in the startup Message log of the client.

I also added a FAQ last week how to delay BOINC crunch start for those that want to speed up booting or feel that BOINC is holding things up during start up. 120 seconds delay would be a comfortable number. Worked for me.

Re: Help needed to tranport an installation

Very possibly if a mirror install were made on multiple machines, the data dir could be carried back and forth for off line crunching.

NOT if BOINC is installed as a service, unless you change the password on the service and change it in client_auth.xml as well (this file is not available on Win2000 systems). But, since for this file you would have to rehash the password (and possibly the username) through a base64 encoder, this may not be so easily done.

If not installed as a service, I don't see a problem with it.
