Re: Suspended - User Active

Jim, BOINC is a little over-complicated. There are no less than *five* places you can suspend it.

Two of those should be irrelevant, one is ruled out. The others are:
1) The main BOINC computation setting. In the Activity menu, select "run always" or "run based on preferences".
2) Also, you can suspect projects individually. Go to the project tab, and check that World Community Grid is not suspended, and that you are allowing new tasks for the project.

If neither of these work, then you have a problem with your preferences. To help us diagnose that, please post the messages from the Messages tab, so we can work out what is going on.

Looks healthy to me. 2 FAAH running and 2 of something else is what I'm now making out (quad), service install (No graphics avail.) and an odd physical mem of 1.87gb, maybe because 128mb is allocated to display.

Run PageDefrag util from Sysinternals to get your VM (swap file) in shape if it is set to autosize.

Other than that, keep it ripping.

Re: Suspended - User Active

Now this is a FAQ in draft and when happy ported to the Start Here forum, lest D. is quicker 8)
(Jean promised us a LIM faq also, so lots more study material ;-).
BOINC: Suspended Computation and Why This Happened To You?

A recurring topic originating from a rich selection of options in the website profiles and the BOINCmgr (BM) Local Preferences
and the BM menu.

First rule is, if nothing is happening and work has stopped: Check the message log to see what it says as e.g.
Suspending Computation And Network Activity - Time Of Day (external wiki)

If the message in the Status column of the Tasks and Projects tab views of the BM are not telling look at the
following locations and go back in your mind: Where did I make a change?
  • There is of course Snooze which lasts a fixed 60 minutes and shows in the BM Tasks Status column as
    "Suspended - Computation Suspended. The way to Un-Snooze is to right click the Systray Icon again and
    click Snooze or via the BM Activity menu taking the client out of Suspend (double function, see 2.).
    • When right clicking:
    • When the client has been snoozed or suspended:
    • The Systray Icon of the WCG Skinned package version:

    A tick mark indicates crunching was suspended, but it does not say for how long!
    The BM Message log records:
    8/24/2008 6:19:17 PM||Suspending computation - user request

    If the Snooze menu entry is greyed it means the client was Suspended indefinitely via the BM Activity menu!

  • The Activity menu of the BM has 3 options:
    • Run Always (a.)
    • Run based on Preferences (b.)
    • Suspend (b.)
    The first and last are easy, but when the middle is selected it requires checking of the scheduled crunching times on the
    website and or in the Local Preferences (Advanced menu of the BM, version 5.10 and up).

    The messages log entries in the BM to go with the 3 computing Activity options are:
    • 8/24/2008 6:24:39 PM||Resuming computation
    • 8/24/2008 6:00:00 AM||Suspending computation - time of day
      8/24/2008 6:00:01 PM||Resuming computation
    • 8/24/2008 6:24:15 PM||Suspending computation - user request
      8/24/2008 6:31:48 PM||Resuming computation
    Caveat: As the messages for Snooze and Suspend are the same, a momentary memory lapse could keep one wondering
    as to what was done. Check both possibilities

  • Are the settings activated to compute or not when the system is in use. If so, again check website and local
    preferences like
    • While computer is on batteries
    • While Computer is in use
    • Every day between the hours of X and Y (local prefs have option to change this for each day of the week)
  • Memory use restrictions and large to very large jobs can lead to "waiting for memory" which for a single
    processor computer would easily amount to complete stopping of computing.

  • Your swap file limitations could lead to stopping too. If other programs have taken it already and the file is not
    allowed to grow further, computing stops for 1 or more if not all jobs. More "waiting for memory"! Visit the
    web device profile or Local Preferences after reading the message log from start to bottom and make amend-
    ments as appropriate to your hardware and personal choices.

  • Did you accidentally suspend the job in the Tasks tab (Status column says Task Suspended by User) or WCG as a whole
    in the Projects tab? (Status column says Suspended by User
    • Select the task or project and operate the Resume button in left margin.
  • Did you accidentally pull the power cord to the laptop and or did a fuse go somewhere, then check the mains.
    The log will show:
    8/24/2008 7:12:18 PM||Suspending computation - on batteries

If all is fine the Message tab log should show one or more of for example:
8/24/2008 7:01:22 PM|World Community Grid|Resuming task X0000050420062200506171625_0 using hcc1 version 606

NB: Any form of Snoozing or Suspending Also ceases any file up/download! Doing a manual Project Update will resume transacting for 5 minutes (needs confirming).
