Okay so after some searching, I've figured out that I need to open up port 443 for the grid agent to send stuff back to the server.
My company restricts general outbound access on port 443 so I need to specify exactly what server my agents are connecting to via port 443. I've done a few days of searching to no avail. Does anyone know what the name(s) of the servers are that the agents send their results back to? Thanks!! |

Hi actng -
----------------------------------------I did a quick forum search for 443 and got several hits. You might look at this post in particular and see if it might help answer your question. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...?thread=1024&offset=9 As I read it, it says port 443 connects to secure.worldcommunitygrid.org(129.33.89.133) and port 80 connects to www.worldcommunitygrid.org(213.1.121.5) I am not a technical type, so perhaps someone else who is and who has the authority can confirm if these conclusions are correct. Until then... Let's keep folding those proteins... .. United States Marine Corps .. |

thanks ski1939!
now why didn't i think of searching 443?!?! turns out there is a webpage http://www.wcgrid.org/cause.html that talks about setting outbound ports and server names... although the IP address listed on that webpage isn't pingable at the moment. perhaps that's just how the servers were configured to avoid DoS attacks. I'll give it a shot for now. thanks for responding to my post. You got me exactly what i needed and have been searching for days. THANKS! |

Hi actng -
----------------------------------------now why didn't i think of searching 443?!?! ... LOL - you are not alone, sometimes the obvious is often missed, just look at some of the redundant posts others, including myself, have made in the forums. thanks for responding to my post... You are very welcome, there are a lot of very helpful people here at WCG , so don't hesitate to post questions in the forums. BTW - I noticed there is a difference between what port 443 connects to in the link you found and the one I referenced. Your link says port 443 connects to a URL starting with server instead of secure and the IP ends in 134 instead of 133. Firewalls have a variety of ways to set permissions for such access. In particular you should configure, as a trusted site, the IP address "server.worldcommunitygrid.org" (129.33.89.134) using outbound port 443. However, your link looks "official" and I would take the name and IP from it as correct for port 443 connections. I wonder if port 80 connecting to www.worldcommunitygrid.org(213.1.121.5) is correct. Again, perhaps someone else who is knowledgeable and who has the authority can confirm if these conclusions are correct. Let's keep folding those proteins... .. United States Marine Corps .. |

We have two major sets of servers running in the hosted environment.
----------------------------------------The first set of servers is running the website (including the forums). The address for these servers is www.worldcommunitygrid.org for port 80 (not-encrypted) traffic and secure.worldcommunitygrid.org for port 443 (encrypted) traffic. The second set of servers runs the UD Grid software that the agent talks to. These servers run at server.worldcommunitygrid.org. This means that if you are configuring a firewall for the agent to communicate with the server, you need to allow the agent to talk with server.worldcommunitygrid.org. If you are configuring a firewall to allow you to use a browswer to sign into the website, then you need to allow secure.worldcommunitygrid.org. As posted earlier - there is a lot of detail about this at: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/join_now/agent_paused.html thanks for participating! knreed [Edit 1 times, last edit by knreed at Mar 15, 2005 4:36:20 AM] |

The agent communicates with the servers using only outgoing connections to server.worldcommunitygrid.org via port 443.
