Uppity screensaver

I have wcg set to run all the time. My screensaver is set to run after 13 minutes. But lately it's been coming on while I'm doing stuff. So I set it to a different screen saver to see what would happen. Now even though my screensaver is supposed to be 3D pipes I'm still getting the wcg screensaver popping up at random intervals.

Re: Uppity screensaver

The way to determine if it's anything related to BOINC going wobbly is to open the BOINCmgr, goto the advanced menu and and hit Shut down connected client and exit BOINCmgr, not close, and see if the phenomena continues.

Re: Uppity screensaver

LINDSEYN, which version of BOINC are you running? We have similar reports to yours, and I would like to gather as much information as possible. Also, please will you note what kind of WCG task is running when this happens?

Thank you.

Re: Uppity screensaver

I have version 5.10.45 and It's only happened with "nutritious rice" tasks. In fact they're all I've run in months

Re: Uppity screensaver

I do have half a theory about what causes this, but I can't work it all out.

Please will you go to C:\Windows and check the version information on the file boinc.scr? Does it match the rest of BOINC? Have you had an older version of BOINC installed at one time? Can you search your computer and see if you have any other copies of boinc.scr?

Thank you!

Re: Uppity screensaver

Okay. That rules out a lot of possibilities - thank you.

The only time the screensaver is launched without Windows controlling it is by BOINC Manager, using a special test mode that is designed to pop up any firewall warnings, so that you can set your firewall to allow the screensaver. Something must be going wrong with this, but I'm baffled as to what.

One way to both test this possibility, and hopefully solve the problem for you is to reinstall BOINC as a service (it's one of the advanced installation options). This means you can run BOINC without BOINC Manager, and hopefully the screensaver will never launch unexpectedly.

The only other outside possibility is that the problem is caused by your security software. What do you use?

Re: Uppity screensaver

Zonealarm has caused problems for BOINC before.

Can you remember updating Zonealarm or AVG in the timeframe when this problem started? Do they auto-update?

Re: Uppity screensaver

avg autoupdates zone alarm is manual

installing as a service seems to have cured the problem. but if i ever need to do something cpu intensive i have to remember to stop it in services instead of having the systray icon to remind me. thanks
