BOINC 6.2.14

In the pile of BOINC manager messages I found a note of the availability of the new version for my pc.
I am running a version which is ancient by todays standards and I wonder if I really need to upgrade so as to comply with WCG requirements. I believe in the adage: "do not fix if it is'nt broken". My pc just sits here and runs and runs - on Linux off course smile
Now, if I need to upgrade, can I simply extract the files into the directory where processing currently takes place and reboot (like firefox et al) or is something more fancy required ?

Thank you for taking time to reply.

Re: BOINC 6.2.14

Wait until 6.2.14 has proven itself in the field. It's early enough if WCG promotes a 6.2 release too. Till then, stick with what you got, which is?

Other discussion on this 6.2.14 you find here:

Re: BOINC 6.2.14

I really don't understand why that message was pushed out this early.

Further, I'm not very happy (understated) about the BOINC calling home to other than the projects attached to the client. There was never a consent from the side of the user to check for versions, nor is there an option to disable that. BOINC is ff uniquely ignoring practices that 99.9% of genuine software applies, even the smallest (that i know off).

Sekerob, remember the "don't phone home" setting. As far as I remember, the official WCG version has that security option enabled.

Yes the disabling of the reference site calling if network is not up to ensure that it meets corporate requirements, but I'm unaware of a version check option. My beef, if it exists is, being it's not up front in the menu, but requires meddling in the cc_config.xml file.... who reads the FAQ or the TFM?

Re: BOINC 6.2.14

Hi guys Sekerob and Didactylos,

Your discussion goes way beyond my original question. I am running Boinc 5.10.21. Based on the units processed and reported as shown on the WCG website, it appears to work as it should.

However, if really need to upgrade I asked originally if I can simply install the new version of Boinc over the old version and in the same directory. I do that with the Mozilla applications.

Thank you for your reply,

Re: BOINC 6.2.14

Hello 39er,
Currently WCG recommends 5.10.45, which installs right over earlier versions. The extended never-ending debugging of BOINC 6.2 has gotten very acrimonious at times. We are waiting for the dust to settle to see if it is stable or not.

Re: BOINC 6.2.14

I reeived the note too, I tried to do an re install but it stayed at the 5.10.45 version so it looks like they've blocked the later versions from downloading till they have the kinks worked out.
