Okay, this is insane. When I ran vista, my computer would return 6-8 results a day for the fightAIDS@home project. Now, running ubuntu hardy 64, I get 1 every 2 days! I remember reading somewhere that BOINC runs a bit slower on linux but this much?!
My system config: ubuntu hardy heron 64 AMD athlon 64 live dual core(4000+) 2gb ram blah blah blah I tried turning up processor frequency scaling to full after I noticed the computer turning down the speed after I let it idle a bit. I figured that was taking away some power that BOINC could have been using. Still nothing. I really like Ubuntu so far and would hate to have to shift back to windows, but this project is important to me and I may have to do it. (And ePSXe doesn't work right for me, but otherwise...) help? |

Hi,
----------------------------------------Apples and Eggs comparison? Are you crunching FAAH50xx jobs unde Linux these last few days? They run 5 times longer. See known issues forum for explanation. Credit will also be proportional to the amount of work/time. ciao

The difference of performance is comparable i.e. your running average should be fairly equal.
----------------------------------------If you run BOINC at 100% throttle and CPU at max cycles i have to pass. The fact that your machine scaled down indicates there are no rouge processing eating CPU time. Certainly when I tried HH on 32 bit I did not notice any material difference.

mentaluproar, how long does each task take? Check your results status page.
How long have you observed this for? Has your granted credit dropped? |

BOINC says 23-24 hours of CPU time per task. The results page says it hasn't received the latest results back yet, and lists three errors for older returned tasks(those were from an older, borked install of Hardy)

It is very likely that the large FAAH work units have upset the time estimation. Please will you wait a couple of days and see how it works out?
If you still have an issue, we can look much deeper into it at that time. |

Hello mentaluproar,
You mentioned that Ubuntu 64 activates the AMD CoolnQuiet circuitry after a while, slowing down the clock rate. This is a recent innovation in Ubuntu that several people have commented on. Ubuntu considers a lowest-priority thread like a BOINC application to be unimportant and slows the clock if nothing of higher priority is running even if the CPU temperature is within acceptable limits. I have not heard how they deal with this problem. You are better situated to investigate this possibility. Please keep us informed. Lawrence |

CoolnQuiet is basically frequency scaling. I turned on two GNOME applets for CPU frequency, one for each core, then I set permissions for that to super user (I think thats what it was.) than I left clicked and found power options. I can lock it to a certain speed or performance setting.
Hm. It looks like a reboot puts it back into "ondemand" mode. I'll lock it at high speed again and run it over night to see what happens. |

H8!
----------------------------------------I have left it to run, full throttle, for about a week and this is the best it came up with: Is it possible that once power management kicks off the screen, which it forgets to do 70% of the time, that BOINC stops processing data?
