Hello,
----------------------------------------I have several computers running grid. Some machines create a lot of noise while running the client at 100% processor usage. Turning the percentage down will make the fans quiet, off course, but I was wondering if I could change this percentage via a scheduled command/script. I tried the boinccmd parameters but I couldn't find one that would do this. Is altering the xml files the only way? And is this a supported action? Which xml would I alter and what steps must I take to reload this file? If you could give me some guidelines, that would be great. Thanks and happy crunching!

Change your device profile online, and it will be picked up by all your computers.

Thanks, but that's not what I'm looking for...
----------------------------------------Please let me clarify. Some machines have a low "boiling point". The fans kick in early and they are loud. Others are quiet during 100% cpu usage. I also have all device profiles already in use and changing them is not what I want to do. So I just want to quiet one or two down and let the others run as configured. I just was wondering if I could do that by creating a WSH-script that could alter the client (via xml?) without compromising the clients stability... maybe this could help others as well...

You can use the global_prefs_override.xml file, but it's a compromise. If you use it, the website preferences won't work any more.

Hi E.Frijters,
----------------------------------------Not following exactly, but the global_prefs_override.xml's are controlled via the Advanced menu (sorry if you already knew) of the 5.10 clients. There's of course, for winxp/w2k/vista that ThreadMaster tool for refined control, but it seems I'm pretty much the only CA mentioning that one. Standard with BOINC and multi-cores the simplest control is by choosing less than max. Just 1 on a dual core equals 50%, 1 on a quad equals 75%, but with TM, you can run all cores at any percent in a smooth way and still have all your user apps run 100%. The BOINC throttle is a nerve wrecker. Anything different than 50% is bound to switch the fans on and off, particularly on laptops. Bad for the fans also. ttyl

Ah... I was looking at this one already...
----------------------------------------The risk of loosing general functionality is too great for me... I was just wandering if there was a programmers solution to this small problem. By the way: there is still a security leak in these xml files. Must I contact the people at the boinc site about that? Or can I contact you about this? Thanks and have a great weekend!

Contact me, and I'll pass it on to BOINC and WCG. Or you can contact BOINC directly as well/instead. But I would like to know.
Email me using wcg@didactylos.net Thank you. |
