You should have asked my approval before banging in the Rice project. I STRONLGLY OBJECT TO GENETIC MANIPULATION. I always had deselected the "If there is no work available ...." and "Please opt me in ..." buttons. I never allowed you to run this project, neither will I ever.

Rice Genome and Genetic Manipulation are not the same thing. You should have read further. I don't know why you got a rice packet, since "other work" was deselected. It can always be aborted.
----------------------------------------Other projects elsewhere have tried to track the human genome, but that does not mean that they participated in genetic manipulation either.

Hi MPCevat,
----------------------------------------See the Members News how the added option works which WAS a result of the auto-opt in policy that WCG ALWAYS ran with prior to this change. The "Please opt me in ..." button did not exist until about 14 days ago, so you could not have chosen it. RICE as said is not a GM directed research, rather a research into finding the best parts in existing grain types and use those having them to cross-breed more Nutritious RICE types with higher yields. See the project research page and posts by the scientist michalguerquin and the PI, random, for explanations: This is the search result for your commodation: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=20230 Hope this is sufficient information for you to add to your view. ciao

just a comment for the future about GMO: this poster does not represent me.
i have nothing against genetic modification. in my opinion you are altering genes every time you have children - unless you divide yourself asexually like a bacteria ![]() |

Even bacteria mutate (the DNA of the bacteria changes). How do you think we get drug resistant strains ?
----------------------------------------Eliminate all of the susceptible ones and only the resistant ones are left to propagate. Cheers

I am french, so be gentle please.
I was astonished too when I saw this project, I first thought this was gmo, but i read, I am still not agree with this project. The project will lead farmer to grow only one species of rice with its ecologic involvments unavoidable, that is exactly what the world doesn't need. They need other kind of crop, not better rice. More it is a project that will allows some company to deal "the best seeds ever", and with our help!!!! I don't want to be a slave. |

We will be gentle regarding your English, as we are with everybody, French or not.
---------------------------------------- Regarding what you say it is a different matter. This project is not meant to produce one best species which suits all situations and environments but to help rice farmers to cross breed rice species which are already available to them for improving their quality. Species from a very wet region will probably not give good results in a dryer one, whatever we compute. "Some company" will not be able either to produce that "best species for everywhere", and even if it could, it would not make much money with it if any rice farmer can make it for free. That being said the project you want to contribute is entirely your own choice, no problem. Cheers. Jean. PS: I don't want to be a slave either, and particularly not the slave of green activists whose objectives are not always innocent. ![]() |

I echo what Mr. Boullier says. By better understanding the rice genome, better varieties for many conditions and environments will eventually be available. I am sure this is not a one size fits all proposal. In addition, by better understanding one genome the better we can understand others, so research on rice may benefit other crops or may lead to entirely different crops which may be better than rice, corn etc. For instance many varieties of foxtail grow here. it is a weed. Maybe some researcher will learn new things about it and turn it into a food crop. Who knows ? At least this research goes into the public domain.

The thing that strikes me as strange about this posting is that the poster has a Nutricious Rice badge. By definition, as I understand it, this means that the poster has performed some 42 nutricious rice tasks at eight hours a time. How come he now complains that he never wanted to do this work? Or else the badge issuing routines don't work!

It could be a "set and forget" volunteer and the amount of posts to his/her name suggests a none frequent visitor as already quite a few discussions went before on GM and Patents and For Profit in this and other fora with Rice running for almost 2 months now.
----------------------------------------Atop, quite moot as now there is the explicit option to opt or not opt-in automatically to new projects.... until then, the WCG policy always was auto opt-in and someone with 2 years membership will have seen projects come and go, unsolicited. So, suggest to move on and crunch, whatever one feels as preferred.
