Screensaver

Having a problem getting screensaver to display. Projects load successfully and run in the background but when I click display graphics it blinks and briefly shows the screesaver and then disappears. I am using Boinc version 5.10.45. Can you help?

Re: Screensaver

okay, so you do this via the BOINCmgr, Simple View or Advanced View (lists task in your buffer)? This is not the screensaver per se, rather is the standard graphical window. The Screensaver itself is often a separate problem when the password function is activated. Disabling that would make it work (bug fixed with the next BOINC version).

What OS, how much RAM is there and what science project? Are your display drivers up to date, specifically the OpenGL elements as that is what BOINC uses. You can get them from the display card manufacturer.

Re: Screensaver

I believe the screensaver problem I have is a WCG problem.
I am using Boinc 5.10.45 to run both Setiathome and WCG . When screensaver activates and runs Setiathome I can view Setiathome screensaver just fine but when any WCG project tries to run as screensaver WCG runs in the background and will not display as screensaver. All I get is a blank screen. Boinc manager screen is set on Accessible View. When I click on WCG display graphics it blinks briefly and will not show graphics. Even though WCG is running, screensaver will not display.

Re: Screensaver

Nobody else is reporting this, so it isn't a general problem.

From your description, it sounds like the graphics application is crashing, or exiting unexpectedly.

Please will you go to your BOINC folder and copy the contents of stderrscr.txt and stdoutscr.txt for us? Thank you.

Re: Screensaver

I believe I have the same problem with new installation of Boinc 5.10.45 on my notebook. Screensaver will load up and I can see even project graphics, but within a second or two it goes to blank black screen. Also when I click on WCG display graphics it blinks briefly and than dissapear.

stdoutgui.txt is empty.
stderrgui.txt is here:

Re: Screensaver

Do a check on your video drivers. It could be that the WCG drawing requirements are slightly different than SETI.

Even if you have an internal (on the motherboard) video card, you can always update the drivers.

If this is windows, goto windowsupdate.microsoft.com and it may tell you if there are newer drivers. I would make sure that the OpenGL drivers were updated and that you were on DirectX 9.0c if this is windows.

Once you get the screensaver working, you amy still see "issues" depending on how you installed BOINC.

As a single user, shared user or service install? Each has its own way of showing screensaver info.

If you did a single user install, BOINC manager will only show graphics for that single users - others will see text only. (unless you use a workaround that works for some people :))

If it was shared user, then it will only show graphics for one user. If there are other users on the same system and they go into screensaver mode, they will only see text.

If you did in service mode, you will not see any graphics and screen saver will only show text.

Re: Screensaver

...

So far I have tried to reinstall DirectX from Microsoft webpage. It didn't help.

It is a single user installation.
